Rising Stars: Meet Donovan Beatty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donovan Beatty

Hi Donovan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey of making music started in 2015 when my best friend and manager asked me to be on his album “Valid Maverick” (To this day, I’m not sure why). After that, I was up and down on the idea of making music seriously until I released two singles in the beginning of 2018, “Breather” & “Change of the Weather.” Since then, I’ve released at least one project a year, including my most recent “Last Year Local.” I’ve had the honor of being featured on Lyrical Lemonade” and various other publications since the release, which has been big for the growth of myself and my music. Seeing the way my music impacts people around me and how much people enjoy my work is the main thing that keeps me wanting to progress and move forward musically and as a person.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has definitely had it’s a fair share of obstacles so that road hasn’t been the smoothest. The main struggles I’ve faced have definitely been more internal than external. Self-doubt and lack of inspiration will kill a dream before anything or anyone else could. The main thing I’ve had to learn is that it’s ok not to be inspired or feel good about what you’re doing. Life has balances and the way you’re gonna feel about yourself and your work will naturally shift up and down as well. The only thing you can really do is continue to persevere and not be down for too long and let the negativity take you completely out of your mind.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been taking music seriously for about three years now. Rap to me is the most musically diverse genre so it’s amazing that I’m able to be a part of such a widespread genre. I’d say my carefree rap style and metaphors are what I’m most known for musically. My goal has always been to be as authentic as possible and as true to myself as possible, which I also feel sets me apart from others. If I started trying to sound like someone else, I wouldn’t be making music for too much longer. The thing I’m most proud of is dropping “Last Year Local” and having my song “Jupiter Jazz” be featured in “Lyrical Lemonade.” Being able to hear the growth in my music and seeing the way it affects other people has been a blessing.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
