Today we’d like to introduce you to DPretty. They and their team shared their story with us below:
DPRETTY is an Afro-pop recording artist with an international appeal. A proud husband and father of two, his colorful culture, passion for music and social activism can be found in his interviews. His dedication to helping people is reflected in his non-profit organization, CGA (Congolese Genocide Awareness), which promotes awareness by engaging and mobilizing supporters who can advocate internationally as well as within the DR Congo. He migrated to the United States 20 years ago and has developed an ear for innovative sounds that integrate his African origin along with modern American music. His musical style is described as Afro-Pop with a mix of pop music stemming from musical influences such as Congolese groups like Wenge Musica 4X4, artists such as Papa Wemba, Koffi Olomide, Jean Goubald, Fally Ipupa and American music icons Michael Jackson, Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake, many R&B artists as well as reggae artists Bob Marley, Sean Paul and Shaggy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been an easy road. There has been a lot of bumps on the road, but all of those were learning experiences that were needed for me to get to where I’m at today. I learned about how to protect myself and my content, how to listen to constructive criticism, how to maximize opportunities with the resources you have, and the importance of determination.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have released a few singles previously, but now that I have completed a body of work, the album called “Adaptation”, I’m getting ready to release the first single titled “Rendez-Vous” on February 24th.
Rendez-Vous is a song by DPretty, Afropop artist from the Congo (DRC). It is inspired by the fact that DPretty would like to highlight the anticipation and the thrill of dating in a relationship. Today’s trends seem to overlook the gentlemen who still enjoy impressing women they would feel honored to be courting. This mix of African and popular music conveys the sentiment that it is time to be excited again on the dating scene.
Look out for the single on all streaming platforms on Friday, February 24th.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
It is a huge risk to release a body of work, an album, without major support such as a powerhouse record label. However, I have partnered with the company OneRPM to distribute my music. I also will release songs of the album one at a time in hope to make it more digestible. It’s important for me to show the diversity the album has and the sound that I’m creating to differentiate myself.
