Rising Stars: Meet Dr. Princess Walton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Princess Walton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur like my late father Larry Walton Sr. who for over 16 years owned a very successful car wash in Atlanta which now has passed down to me. In 2020, two months right before the pandemic hit, I started a candle company named Scents by Princess. My father played a great role before his passing in 2021 due to complications of COVID-19 in helping me establish my candle company by funding some of my materials. With extensive research, I decided to create and make high-quality, unique dessert-scented candles that look and smell amazing but are affordable. Every candle is handmade, and hand-poured and made with Soy Paraffin blend or Gel Wax. My love and passion for candles has driven the company which continues to grow bringing customers the best candles and more. After losing my father in 2021, I was very grief-stricken and for a couple of months stopped making candles. However, so many customers continued to ask about my candles that with the help and encouragement from my brother, mother, and son, I started back making candles and have been going strong since. Scents by Princess continues to grow daily. My future goal is to open a store right here in Atlanta.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road because I had to learn what wax and wicks work for me and how to get my candles to smell good. People think that making candles is easy but it’s not. You really must get the science and math down so that you can have a good quality smell good candle. Once the pandemic hit, it was hard to get materials because there was a shortage of supplies. Another challenge for me is that I lost one of my big supporters (My daddy). The loss of my dad really affected me and got me down. I stopped making candles for a while because I was too heartbroken over the unexpectedly passing of my father. Because of my passion for making candles and encouragement from my family, I started back doing what I love. I know that my dad would say keep going and be very proud of the progress that I have made!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a proud HBCU graduate of Alabama State University and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. I have my Doctorate degree in Education Leadership. For the past 20 years, I have worked in education. I’m most proud that I was a hard-working single mother that raised an Awesome son who is currently attending my Alma Mater, Alabama State University and maintains a GPA of 3.8 while being a college athlete.
