Rising Stars: Meet Dunesha Barker-Bey of Johns Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dunesha Barker-Bey

Hi Dunesha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had a love for cooking, especially for people that came to my home. It was my way a blessing them. Then I started cooking for a large gatherings at my church and then at work and then I thought I don’t wanna quit my full-time job, but I would like to start this as a business, So I started doing so for catering then because of life and having family demands, I kind of put things to the side for a little bit until a friend of mine asked me to do A cake for their wedding, they didn’t have much money, but they really wanted a nice cake and I told them I would help them out then from that I started doing more weddings and more specialty cakes and then some of my old clients saw that I was back doing orders again and asked me to do full on catering for a couple of their events. Then people at my church saw what I was doing for the kids and our youth ministry cooking a lot for them and then that got me open up to a whole other type of Clientele so I started doing a lot of catering for weddings and for parties for people that I went to church with. So now decades, Later I have a business that caters to all types of clientele from those at my church and The business world to friends and neighbors and by word-of-mouth. I really think that what sets me apart from a lot of people in the catering business is that first and foremost I put a lot of love and care and excellence into my cooking and personalization to each person‘s events, I truly care about their event being a success in their eyes. Also I use the best quality and Freshes ingredients That are available, and lastly, I charge a fair market value for my services. Integrity in my business and having a high standard for not only the things that I do and how I cook, but also for my staff as well, everything that we do is making sure that the client is pleased in every aspect

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Just trying to balance family, and a full-time job and a business there’s always gonna be struggles but all my strength and my Help comes from the Almighty God, through him is where I gain my strength from. Sometimes life throws you some curveballs some of the worst ones can be when your children are involved and one of my daughters had significant health and mental health issues that we had to work through and that’s very hard to balance, also my with my own personal health but with God‘s help and a good community, we made it through. I think that the blessing in every struggle is that your testimony is that you made it through and my testimony is definitely through every trial and tribulation. I made it through through, depending on the one who created me, there’s no way that I would be here where I’m at if it wasn’tfor leaning in to God’s promises for what he had for me. So knowing that gave me the strength to press through and press on every day.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So I’m a caterer and a baker That is my business, but I also work for the government as my primary job. I think as a caterer and a baker I’m most known for just having delicious food and being excellent and my presentation and my delivery of my food. Right now I’m in a season of making a lot of large scale, charcuterie boards, that people just love also specialty cakes specially for young kids I find that post Covid parents are putting a little bit more into specialty cakes for their children to make their birthday a little bit more special

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I am originally from Anchorage, Alaska born and raised. I moved here to Atlanta about 25 years ago. But I was heavily into sports and horseback riding and showing horses. I played basketball volleyball track and field cheerleading honestly, I was hardly ever at home or inside. I love people and being around people and socializing even as a young child. I was always very personable very hospitable and just loved having fun and really appreciated people from different cultures. Different backgrounds. Alaska is a big melting pot of different people from all over the world I had friends that their parents were from Thailand or Russia or Puerto Rico or Samoa it was just a big melting pot of different cultures that I enjoyed the people and their food. I think that’s where I got such a broad appreciation for different cultures and their food.
