Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylon and Melissa Anthony.
Hi Dylon and Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My great-grandmother (who lived to be 99 years old) was a plant lover! She had a flower garden in the front yard and a vegetable garden in the backyard. She had multiple houseplants inside which were beautifully arranged. My mother (Co-Owner of Fuzzy Fern) inherited some plants from her when she passed away. She also inherited some plant knowledge. My mother, Melissa, started making terrariums and gifting them to friends and family! I saw her terrariums, thought they were super cool and decided to make a couple for my house! We both loved to make terrariums. Our terrarium styles were very different, and people loved them. My sister Drew, who is extremely artistically talented loves plants as well and creates beautiful fairy gardens and planted teacups which are just as popular. Additionally, she designs custom artwork on jeans. Of course, we started selling our planty creations which grew into not only making terrariums and fairy gardens, but also making moss walls, living walls, and other creative plant displays. We fully plan on having our own brick-and-mortar very soon! We love to participate in pop-up shops around town. Additionally, we teach terrarium classes at a few different craft and design stores in our area.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our biggest struggles have been making enough time to work on Fuzzy Fern Projects. Creating a beautiful terrarium takes time and thought. Because we all have separate full-time jobs, it’s quite hard to build more than a couple of large terrariums a week.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are family owned. My mother, sister and I work together and often solicit the help of my other brother and Dad. We’re known for extremely creative and unique plant arrangements from containers and arrangements that are hip and funky to vintage to charmless timeless designs. We have types of arrangements that can be found anywhere from a child’s desk at home to commercial spaces in office buildings.
We are most proud of the fact that we’re able to express our creativity and people are able to appreciate it, adore it, and want more of it!
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
We actually started the business during covid so we can’t compare to pre-covid, however, we learned how valuable it is to be a family business during the rough times!
