Hi Elizabeth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From a young age, I struggled with skin issues and their impact on my self-confidence. Growing up in Sarasota, Florida, I was a tall, plus-size child who often felt self-conscious about my uneven skin. I frequently wore layers of clothing to conceal it. I remember my grandmother’s extensive skincare routine, which involved generously applying creams and lotions. Even in her eighties, her skin was radiant. Inspired by her, I explored numerous products, both medicated and over-the-counter, but none yielded the same results for me. During her final days, I cared for her by moisturizing her skin and brushing her hair, just as she would have done for me. After her passing, I continued these rituals for myself, finding comfort and connection to her. This marked the beginning of my self-care journey, which included incorporating positive affirmations.
A few months later, on my birthday, I embarked on a new path. I transitioned away from my career as a plus-size model and began researching and experimenting with natural oils and butters. This process of formulating my own products ignited a deeper sense of self-love and appreciation. While my previous modeling work was driven by a desire to empower other women, my own self-acceptance had been superficial. With the launch of AquariusbyDesignCo, I sought a more profound purpose. I have poured immense care and dedication into this business, and I am confident that both my products and my personal experience will positively impact others seeking transformation and inner peace.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a skincare/self-care business with only dedication and love, but without prior experience or guidance, presents a unique set of challenges. It’s like navigating uncharted territory with a strong compass but no map.
I independently acquired the necessary expertise in skincare formulation, meticulously researching the science behind each ingredient and its potential interactions. This included rigorous study of safety protocols and best practices. Furthermore, I developed proficiency in various business functions, including marketing and advertising across multiple social media platforms, product photography, financial management, e-commerce platform administration, and the artistic design of product labels.
Despite these challenges, my dedication and love for self-care are powerful motivators. By being resourceful, continuously learning, and seeking support where I could find it (online communities, workshops, etc.), I overcame these hurdles and build a successful business. It’s a steep learning curve, but my passion is my greatest asset.

Launching my skincare business in 2021, right after the world shifted, felt like a huge leap of faith. The skincare industry is undeniably saturated and fiercely competitive, but something inside me knew I had to try. It was a risk, a big one, but I’m driven by a deep desire to not only grow my business but also to help as many people as possible discover the joy of truly nourishing their skin. More than anything, this journey is about proving to myself that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Every handcrafted product, from my luxurious body butters to my invigorating sugar scrubs, is made with that same determination and passion. I’m committed to using only the finest organic ingredients and creating unique, gentle products that truly make a difference.
