Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric J. Green.
Eric J., we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Atlantic City, NJ. I moved to Atlanta when I was 18 in 2009. After being a V103 Freestyle Champion and traveling the world as a professional Battle Rapper, I fell into the world of wine and craft beer while in Veneto, Italy, and Munich, Germany. After being a part of the entertainment and hospitality scene for 14 years, I became a Spanish Wine Specialist officiated by the European Union and a Level One Cicerone (beer expert). I currently run the beverage program at Barcelona Wine Bar W. Midtown, teach wine courses, train/compete in multiple martial arts, and still actively battle rap around the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A part of my life in Atlanta was couch surfing, staying in shelters, and sleeping at Marta stations. My early 20s was a trying time, but I stayed resilient and never took the easy route and moved back home. I knew something was going to come out of it, and I am grateful for everyone who allowed me to sleep on their couches and floors.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known as a Craft Beer/Spanish Wine Specialist, a successful Battle Emcee from the Atlanta market, and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor. I specialize in Spanish Wine education, craft beer/brewing, and hand-to-hand combat. My mentor calls me “The Modern Day Renaissance Man”. For my involvement of the arts, science, and combative. I am most proud of being recognized by the European Union as a Spanish Wine Specialist and invited to train in Madrid to be a Spanish Wine Educator. I am the only Black Man in this class to be awarded the opportunity.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Michael Paul (restauranteur and mentor), Michael Jones was the first man to give me a mixology lesson, Jamal Parker was the first guy to introduce me to bartending, Sim Walker gave me my shot as a FOH manager in high volume, Tasha Belle introduced the world to me, Yusef Walker was my best friend in the industry who showed me more love than most, Brian Agee saved me from being homeless to leveling up… so much more! I am blessed.
