Rising Stars: Meet Erica Mason

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Mason.

Erica Mason

Hi Erica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a small-town country girl that always dreamed of impacting a generation. I grew up in Williston, Florida right next to a cow pasture and a cemetery. Life was slow, but it was rich with love and family. I started in music when I was 17, traveling to different churches and performing. I had no idea that music would bring me to the place that I am today. The first song I wrote was a remake of Naz’s One Mic in which I called it “One Life”. The day I performed it, everyone in the building was crying. That was the day I knew that my gift was special. From there, I’ve stayed committed to building my craft and growing as much as I can. That faithfulness has opened the doors I currently walk through today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? It has not been a smooth road. I struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my life. The biggest pain point was my sexuality. Growing up in church, I was taught that it was wrong for me to be queer and serve God. So I spent years denying this part of me, which turned into self-hatred, and ultimately lead to a suicide attempt.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in making music that heals the soul. As a survivor of a suicide attempt and a mental health advocate, music was the tool I used to heal. It’s my safe place where I’m able to be honest and raw about my feelings while I process my experiences. I’m proud of my authenticity. Coming out was one of the hardest yet best decisions that I could have made. Being able to remind people that they are loved, seen, and chosen regardless of their sexuality is so rewarding. I believe this sets me apart because in a time where music has become more humorous entertainment, I am focused on healing the souls of many hurting people.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck or simply being blessed has played a role. I’ve been in the right places at the right time by simply saying “yes’ to opportunities that I had no idea would benefit me. I’ve held a posture of serving people and that has opened so many doors.
