Today we’d like to introduce you to Flemming Love.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist who has been creating many forms of art since. I was 14. Now that I’m 30 my main areas of focus are: mixology, painting, interior design and embroidery art. I am truly bursting at the seams with creative ideas at all times.
Although mixology is my job, it is also my passion. I moved to Atlanta to pursue my dreams in the food & beverage industry. Now I am the General Manager/Beverage Director at Nick’s Westside as well as the Beverage Director at The Usual ATL. I am honored to pursue one of my passions as a full-time career path and I take great pride in creating craft cocktails and mastering classics.
Since moving to Atlanta, I have also been taking art commissions for people’s homes and consulting for interior design. These are things I did a lot in North Carolina, where I’m from. I have exhibited my art at various locations in Western North Carolina and currently have paintings at The Appalachian Tea Company in Bryson City.
I come from extremely humble beginnings and I have very big goals, which I believe Atlanta is going to help me achieve. Both the art scene and craft cocktail world are bountiful here and I look forward to the future.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Poverty is by far the biggest obstacle I have overcome. Addiction is the second. I have been sober for five years and consider it my greatest achievement to have created stability in my life despite my past.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My paintings are abstract and colorful. I have an eye for composition and have been working on contemporary painting techniques for 16 years.
My embroidery art is complex and time-consuming. It requires diligence and dedication. I love doing contemporary embroidery because it is a very Appalachian tradition to do as well. Lots of people in my family before me were into it.
My interior designs are also colorful and lively. I love bringing people out of their comfort zones with unique color palettes and styles.
My mixology and management style in the food & beverage industry are a big source of pride for me. I try to respect the science and stories behind every cocktail. Despite being sober for five years I still find tremendous joy in my craft. I also love making an effort to treat my staff members with respect and appreciation. Growing up in the industry was hard for me and I try to be a part of the more progressive and ultimately kind movement that’s happening in that sphere.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Resilience.
