Rising Stars: Meet Frances Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frances Lewis.

Hi Frances, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born and raised in Jackson, MS in the summer of 1993 earlier than the doctors planned to parents of four, doing the opposite is somewhat of a pattern. My lungs were developed to the doctor’s surprise but even as a child, you wouldn’t know it since I was very timid and shy. Always the smallest of my peers, I sang in private unless my mom insisted. I sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in 3rd grade for a school program and an administrator suggested I audition for the performing arts school in the area. I was accepted for dance and voice. I could only focus on one, so I chose to dance. Later transferring to a private catholic school four years later, I continued to sing in the school choir through high school and at church (since mom was either director or involved in some kind of way). I graduated high school and attended Mississippi State University pursuing mathematics and a medical career like a lot of my family expected. Instead of going that route after graduation I decided to pursue music instead. I took what I saved and just moved to Atlanta, GA with, at best, an eight month plan. I currently model and perform live in the downtown area. I am working to create original music and enjoy experiencing music in different aspects.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think I’ve had common struggles if that is even a thing: family issues just like everyone has. I didn’t get as much support about my decision to move on a whim but that changed over time. My mom’s role in my life changed when she suffered a heart attack that affected her memory and mobility during my college years.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In a short amount of time, I have been able to network and meet great musicians in the area and perform and get great feedback. I am able to connect with my audience in these smaller settings and really allowed me to adapt to fast-changing environments and elements when it comes to open mic and the business aspect of venues. I am articulate and am personable. I enjoy connecting with people and music is definitely one way to do it. Just singing a song in a style that reminds someone of home and old love or great experience allows people to be more vulnerable and connect on a different level. I am coachable but still know what I like and want. I feel this will allow me to continue to grow through adversity.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. I’ve gotten so far just by jumping. Be smart about putting yourself in compromising situations in an attempt to progress but when you get an opportunity, take it serious and jump.
