Today we’d like to introduce you to Freddy River.
Hi Freddy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is very complex. I’ve gone through so much in my 22 years of living so far, so my music taste has been very diverse over the years. However, the journey began where I grew up – in Los Angeles, California. I was about ten years old. Piano and guitar were the first instruments that I taught myself how to play at that age. I definitely had a greater passion for the keys since it’s the only instrument that I am fluently good at to this day. I started making beats from my dad’s laptop when I was about 13 years old, but it wasn’t serious at all. I was good at it though. I was also good at drawing and writing at the time, so again, the music wasn’t serious. But I did find myself, at a really young age, in a place where I wanted to really be something and really do something with my life. I just didn’t know what until I was about 17. I met a local rapper who I ended up trying to build with just to get away from my family. Even though he was an extremely toxic person to be around, we got really close… until we didn’t.
From 2016-2019, I felt like I wasted my time creating music under the name “David Eppik” for a person that did not fully appreciate my talents. For someone that was holding me back from my true potential. We ended up going our separate ways at the end of 2019. I thought it was the end of the line for my career until the beginning of 2020 when I officially became Freddy River. 2020 became the hardest year of my personal life but the best year for my music life. It was the first year I’ve touched on the west coast genre of hiphop, and I realized that I was born for this. Creating west coast melodies for the producer community is how I started to get my name out there with connections to artists such as Larry June, Wiz Khalifa, Monroe Flow, Le$, etc. For the past two years, Freddy River has been slowly and steadily growing and I hope one day that it becomes one of the greatest names in the music industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Most of the struggle has come from finances. I don’t trap, I don’t scam, I don’t do anything illegal for the bag. I’ve trapped before, but I got out of that lifestyle because it wasn’t the lifestyle I wanted. I work a simple 9-5 while building up a full-time career as a producer. It’s not easy, but I keep my head up, have patience, and know that I’m gonna make something happen eventually.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the moment, I produce west coast music and I make beat tapes that are out on all streaming platforms. I’d say I’m most proud of my sample creations. The melodies I make are very powerful in the community and I have been starting to realize how much they inspire people.
What’s next?
Other than becoming one of the greatest names in west coast hiphop, I want to do other things with my life such as real estate, film scoring and producing, and possibly writing a novel.
