Rising Stars: Meet Georgia Dawkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Dawkins.

Georgia Dawkins

Hi Georgia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi Voyagers! I am an author, journalist, television producer, and comedian. I have had the pleasure of working all over this country as a local news producer but now I’m a full-time entrepreneur and that’s mostly because of Atlanta.

The one thing you get when you live in Atlanta is a community, and my village is a constant reminder that I can do anything. From my cousins on the east side to my fellow Florida A&M University alumni embedded all over the metro, there is no shortage of support. They keep showing up for me and that’s love.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to becoming a full-time entrepreneur has not been easy, but it’s not supposed to be. I can look back on the struggles I had when I first moved to Atlanta and see how it was all necessary. I needed to experience the hurt and deceit from people in the industry because it helped me become a better businesswoman.

Without the loss of my intellectual property, I never would have known how important it is to protect and own my work. Without people taking advantage of me, I never would have known the importance of boundaries. I’m better now. Stronger and wiser. I take those same lessons that I learned in media to standup comedy. I don’t play about my business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
That’s a fun question because I wear a lot of hats, but I’m best known for being a journalist and producer. I got my start as a local news producer, and now I’m an entertainer. It feels surreal sometimes because this was not the plan when I went to journalism school.

By this age–my mid-thirties, I intended to be a news director in a top-20 market, but things changed. My whole plan was to get in a position to hire my friends, and I’m still doing that. Now, I get to hire comedians, directors, editors, and other experts for the various projects I’m working on.

The thing that sets me apart from others is my faith. Sure, everyone has faith, but on what level? My faith is delusional. Time and time again, I have proven that I’m willing to risk it all, and sometimes that meant losing it all, but I always get it all back and some.

The Bible says your gift will make room for you, and I am in awe of the layout and the amenities.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
What is resilience for $800? *LAUGHS IN SARCASM* No, seriously. It’s the bounce back for me!

I used to think resilience was a bad word because it was something that I had to be to survive. I now know that it’s a gift to start over. Not everyone gets to do that. Not everyone knows how, but it’s just a matter of putting one foot in front of the other, no matter how hard it may be.

Resilience is built over time. You have to KEEP starting over. You have to KEEP having faith. You have to KEEP finding the energy to do the work until it flows. And one day, it will flow.
