Today we’d like to introduce you to Honcho Smoov.
Hi Honcho, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started on November 7th, 1994. Born into a musical family, music was always around, whether it was church, family functions, rehearsals in the basement or just going out with my pops. From an early age, I fell in love with it. Playing drums at age three & playing in the church by the time I was four. I was rooted heavily in the gospel but started falling in love with the sound of rnb. By age eight, I was forming lil rap groups with my cousin and some of our friends from school, which I didn’t realize at the time was the beginning of what was to come. Fast forward a few years later and those groups turned into one last group consisting of my cousin, lil brother, and myself. We gained local attention around the metro Atlanta area and went on a little run. As we started to get older everyone started to venture off into their own hobbies and interests. By 14, I was writing my own music and started trying to find myself and the sound that I wanted to produce, and at 19, I put out my first solo mixtape. After some time me and my cousin formed one last duo together (LAVI$H). This is where I really took the time to hone into the music (when you start paying for sessions and engineers you’re not trying to waste any time lol.) This lasted for about two years before my cousin decided to pursue his acting career and put music to the side.
Even with him changing his field of entertainment, he gave me his blessing of going on and just doing my thing solo. This is when I started to experiment with different sounds and genres. After a few years, I ended up going to jail for a lil minute, but during that time I was able to sit still and really think about what it was I wanted to really do with music and my life. Now fast forward to 2023, I’ve written, produced, and arranged a number of records. Giving the opportunity to executive produce a rap album for an artist and then another opportunity to executive produce and write the entire EP for an RnB artist. I recently just released a Gospel Inspirational song with my a good friend of mine by the name of B. Gossett which features me as the lead writer/vocalist and additional verse from Gospel recording artist Darnell Williams of the William Singers. Moving forward I wish to touch as many genres as possible and be able to touch the hearts of different people through the gift of music and song. Main goal is to be able to not only give back to my community but to be able to pour into the lives of all people and let them know that no matter your situation or circumstance you have the ability to be great and do great things.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t always been smooth. As we all know, when you’re working towards doing good, the enemy is going to try to throw every obstacle your way to prevent you from getting to that place where you want to be. You have to go through the no’s and all of us like what you’re doing but there’s no support being shown or given that actually lets you know yea I’m on the right track. It’s a constant battle between the mind and the heart. Some days you just want to let it all go and move on to something different, but as long as you have perseverance and faith I believe you can achieve whatever it is your heart desires.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an independent artist that started out playing drums which led to my passion for music. That passion led to me learning to play the keys and then the bass. I mainly focus on rnb, but I dabble around in everything else. I feel like rnb is my core thing, and rap, gospel, and pop are just a plus. What I’m most proud of is the growth not only as a person but also as an artist. Being able to take a blank canvas and turn it into a work of art. I think what sets me apart is that I’m not focused on trying to be like anyone except for who I am.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
One valuable lesson I took from it is that life is going to happen whether you’re ready for it or not. All you can do is continue to push forward and become the better version of you.
