Rising Stars: Meet Isabella Vaca of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabella Vaca.

Hi Isabella, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello everyone! I’m Isabella, originally from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, a city rich in culture, traditions, and vibrant color that has deeply shaped how I see the world. My journey into interior design began in a very personal way. Growing up with my grandmother, who struggled with hoarding, I witnessed firsthand how our surroundings can impact our mental and emotional well-being. That experience left a lasting impression on me and made me realize that spaces aren’t just physical, but instead, they hold emotions, memories, and energy.

The true spark came when I was sixteen and watched a video of an interior designer transforming a space in a way that felt emotional and healing, not just visually appealing. That moment opened my eyes to the idea that design could be a powerful tool for expression and growth.

Bolivia’s rich traditions and diverse architectural influences have always fascinated me, especially the way spaces can tell a story. Studying abroad has only expanded that perspective; it has allowed me to experience design through many cultural lenses and taught me that great design connects people. For me, interior design goes far beyond aesthetics. It’s about creating environments with personality, intention, and value; spaces where every detail contributes to an authentic narrative.

I am inspired by history, art, and cultural influences, which allow me to merge traditional elements with new ideas. Sustainability is an important part of my approach, not only in terms of materials but in designing timeless spaces that resonate emotionally, foster lasting connections, and enrich the human experience. Exploring different cultures has helped me see how design can bring people together and highlight the beauty of diversity. I see every project as an opportunity to create spaces that reflect individuality while enhancing the way people experience their surroundings.

Coming from Bolivia, where creative fields like interior design are still developing, I knew I had to take a leap to fully pursue this path. That’s what led me to SCAD, where I am pursuing a BFA in Interior Design with a minor in Architectural History. Being here has been a transformative experience, helping me grow both as a designer and as a person.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has had its twists and turns, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Being an international student in the U.S. has been an incredible adventure that pushed me far beyond my comfort zone. Of course, there were challenges, adapting to a new culture, figuring things out in a second language, but those experiences helped me grow and find my voice as a designer. They taught me the importance of staying true to myself while staying open to the world around me. I’ve realized that real growth often happens when you step into the unknown.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an interior design student passionate about storytelling. That’s why, when designing, I like to incorporate narrative elements that help me connect both with my clients and with the spaces they will experience. I believe that creating environments that are emotionally resonant, filled with identity, authenticity, and history, is what defines my approach. My work often blends traditional and cultural influences with a modern, thoughtful touch, always aiming to design with purpose.

One of my proudest achievements is my recent Studio III project, Vibrant Modernity, a conceptual workspace design for Dwell Magazine, which was honored with a Gold ASID Georgia Design Excellence Award in the Student Theoretical Comprehensive Project category. I’m truly grateful and honored by the recognition. Vibrant Modernity was inspired by Dwell’s belief that modernity doesn’t have to be boring. It’s more than just a workspace. It’s a hub for creativity, rooted in cultural context, color theory, and user-centered goals like strengthening brand identity, fostering belonging, and encouraging improvisation and innovation.

I believe what sets me apart is my versatility and adaptability. I strive to align every design detail with my clients’ unique needs and goals, from research and development to concept ideation and creative solutions. My multicultural background also deepens the intention I bring to each project. I see design as a bridge between people, past and future, function and feeling. I think deeply about how spaces make people feel, not just how they look.

I’m still learning every day, but I’m excited to keep growing and exploring new design methods that turn spaces into livable experiences.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is being able to design with authenticity, creating spaces that not only function but also feel like an extension of someone’s story. As I’ve grown as a designer, one of the most fulfilling parts of the journey has been discovering my own voice: learning to showcase my personality and develop a style that feels true to who I am.

Coming from Bolivia, a country layered with history, tradition, and cultural richness, I carry that influence with pride. It has shaped the way I see the world, and how I design within it. I don’t just want to create beautiful spaces; I want to reflect cultural and brand identity and create moments of connection. That’s why I always aim to blend traditional roots with thoughtful, innovative touches that feel fresh yet grounded.

Storytelling is very important to me, and I believe innovation happens when we design with soul, when we dare to push creative boundaries while honoring where we come from.

I also believe in being true to yourself because what you put out into the world is what you receive back. Honesty and awareness of your actions matter, not just in design but in life. Staying honest in my work and with myself allows me to create with intention and integrity.
