Rising Stars: Meet Isaiah Foster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaiah Foster.

Hi Isaiah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started photography when I was in college. I used to model, and one day my father told me to bring the camera with me and see if I could learn how to use it properly. So I got the camera, and the photographer introduced me to her teacher.

The teacher gave me a 30-second class about iso shutter speed and Fstop. So I went out to Roosevelt island over the weekend with my mother and took hundreds of pictures I had seen in magazines, then showed him on Mo weekday. He said you don’t know what you were doing, but you were doing better than kids I’ve been teaching the last two years. Please don’t ever put your camera down. And I’ve been shooting ever since

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It started smoothly because it was just a hobby, and I was doing it for fun. I was just being myself and creating what I love. Then It started to get ruff when I made it into a business. Building my clientele has been a challenge, being I move a lot. As soon as I build everything up, I move to another state. Then it’s like I have excellent quality work, but no one knows me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer that specializes in natural light. I’m uniquely known for depth and field. I’ve been trying new things, but sometimes you have to go back to what made you fall in love with photography. I’m most proud of the smiles I put on people’s faces when they see how I captured them. I’m also proud of all the publications I got, from H&M & source magazine to shooting the cover of Verticals magazine. And being the head photographer for Raw Artists’ multiple events (Rva, DC, and Baltimore.) What sets me apart from other photographers is I do it all fashion portraits, editorial events, and weddings. It’s no ceilings over here.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Covid showed me plenty of ways to create unique courses. Longs, there’s a will, there’s a way! Also, in times when you can’t physically work with people is a time you can learn more about your craft by researching if that’s reading books studying on YouTube college, or just practicing with things in the house.
