Rising Stars: Meet Jamaal McPhee of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaal McPhee.

Hi Jamaal, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I’ve lived in ATL for a little under 3 years. For most of my life I’ve been very much into the arts. I am an accomplished filmmaker, videographer, photographer, and sketch artist/painter. I am a kid of the 90’s (the best decade) and a lot of my art and views reflect that. I was raised by the films, music, and television shows of that era. I attended film school at Brooklyn College and received my BA in Film Production.
After film school, along with shooting some documentaries of my own independently, I also segued into the crazy world of reality television, which was beginning to gain tremendous popularity at the time. As a camera operator shot for shows including, but not limited to, “Making The Band,” “Married at First Sight,” “The Apprentice,” “Inkmaster,” and “Top Chef.” After 13 years in that world, I became frustrated by the formulaic nature and lack of creativity in that industry and ceased working on shows.
Photography was always an itch that in my heart I knew I needed to scratch one day so I began pursuing it. After covid is when I really began to take my love of photography seriously and I’ve taken my desire to “make great” pictures to the next level since moving to Atlanta in late 2022.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been smooth. As with any skill photography takes time, trial and error, and in most cases, failure in order to master it. And by no means am I saying I’ve mastered photography. But, I’m pretty damn good at it. I’m often unsatisfied with my progress, which is something I’ve been told I need to work on about myself. Also being in Atlanta, which is very different in a lot of ways than my hometown, has taken some getting used to. However, every day in Atlanta brings a discovery that brings a new appreciation for the city.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional photographer/filmmaker and artist.

As a photographer I specialize in Portraits. As a filmmaker I have produced mostly documentaries/shows. I am most proud of the way I’ve excelled in my photography and the docs I’ve shot in the past.

What are your plans for the future?
I have a couple of documentaries currently in development. I’m looking forward to their completion and sharing them with the world in the near future. I am also looking forward to exploring Atlanta with the purpose of capturing great images and taken advantages of some of this city’s untapped potential.
