Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Singh
Hi Jen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For over 30 years, my journey has been filled with creativity and evolving through many roles—freelance illustrator, graphic designer, art director, president of a nonprofit arts organization, and now, co-owner of a handmade shop and gallery. Each chapter has deepened my passion for the arts, shaping where I am today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Working in creative fields is deeply rewarding, though it has often been a financial challenge. Still, my greatest fulfillment comes from sharing my knowledge—whether through teaching painting workshops or mentoring emerging artists. I’m especially passionate about supporting women in the arts, knowing firsthand how tough it can be to establish yourself in the creative industry. While I’ve had many positive experiences working with men, there have been times when I felt overlooked or taken advantage of.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a painter who loves to experiment, blending drawing and painting while exploring a variety of materials. Whether painting in watercolor, acrylic or oil, energetic brushstrokes and luminosity captivate me. I’m drawn to creating expressive works featuring animals, forest creatures, birds, and the female figure. Deeply connected to nature, I stay informed about conservation and endangered species, and my time spent outdoors—meditating and practicing yoga—infuses my work with introspection and emotional depth. For years, I searched for a singular “style,” but I’ve come to embrace my ever-evolving creative journey. If my paintings evoke emotion and connection, I know I’ve succeeded.
Any big plans?
For over a decade, I’ve co-owned Garage Door Studio, a handmade shop and gallery in Avondale Estates, providing a home for local artists—and for my own work in our studio gallery. Teaching workshops has been a rewarding part of my journey, and my students have even encouraged me to create online classes.
As I approach the empty-nest phase, I’m eager to travel more. This spring, I’ll visit Italy for the third time, seeking inspiration for my next creative chapter. Iceland and Norway are also on my bucket list—I’m fascinated by Icelandic horses and Arctic reindeer. Funny enough, I’m not a fan of the cold, but something about those landscapes keeps calling to me.
