Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Davis.
Hi Joe, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been someone that leaves golf course reviews on google maps, but I had an epiphany that I was basically acting as an unpaid employee of google’s.
So earlier this year I decided to create an instagram account @atl.golfs and start posting my reviews there. I got really good feedback, but wanted to make sure people could easily find the reviews in the future so I started building www.atlgolfs.com
Soon I learned about all of the golf apparel company’s based out of Atlanta. Then the social media creators, then I learned about artists and photographers, then I learned about all of the entrepreneurs doing all kinds of things in the golf space.
I quickly realized that there wasn’t a place where you could learn about all of the different industries and people that make up the Atlanta Golf Scene, and if you don’t know about them, how can you support them? So, I began building an apparel section to my site highlighting the apparel brands, then the creators, then the entrepreneurs and everything in between.
So what I am hoping to do with my company is promote and feature all of the companies, creators, and courses that represent ATL Golf so the larger community can support them.
Now I have a great following on social media and over 1100 subscribers to my newsletter. It seems many people are aligned with that mission.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It actually has been relatively smooth. It caught fire quickly, so the struggle has been just holding on and staying consistent. I have a 9-5 day job, an amazing wife, a 2 month old, and a 2 year old. So really just finding time to prioritize this side-hustle has been the largest challenge (and it’s not small challenge).
But the actual business and getting momentum has been relatively easy because there has been such an appetite for what I’m providing. That becomes a natural motivator to continue pushing and growing my account to reach more and more Atlanta-area golfers.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in highlighting the various aspects of the Atlanta Golf scene. Something that got me on the map is my Atlanta Masters series where I’m matching public golf holes around Atlanta with golf holes at Augusta National, home of the Masters. People have really appreciated the time and effort that series takes and it’s also really cool.
I think another thing that is unique about my company is that it is so focused on helping others. Sure, I’m trying to drive subscribers to my newsletter and follow me, but its so that Atlanta Golfers can actually stay informed on what EVERYONE else is doing. What brands had apparel drops last month, what courses should you visit (or shouldn’t visit), what charity events are coming up, who is an up and coming creator worth following, etc.
I think it’s a breath of fresh air to have a business that is so focused on helping others.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To ask for what you want. So often people are afraid to ask because they fear rejection.
A great example is a recent partnership with The Frog. They provided free tee times for my newsletter subscribers who refer friends to join. That’s a HUGE value and it generated nearly 100 new subscribers, but if I never asked then I wouldn’t have had that opportunity.
Same thing with PGA SuperStore and other businesses I’ve partnered with.
