Today, we’d like to introduce you to Johnnie & Jaylon Gordon.
Hi Johnnie & Jaylon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Sure, thanks for having us. Jaylon and I have been acting since we were four and five years old. When I was three, I told my mom I wanted to be a “model man” while pointing at a JCPenney ad. Our mom was preoccupied, so I went to my dad and told him, “I want to be in the TV like Zach and Cody”. Thankfully, our parents took action and decided to cultivate our dreams. Jaylon and I were signed to an agency and things took off very quickly. We filmed our first movie (“A Christmas Blessing”) together at the age of six and seven, where we played brothers and starred alongside Omari Hardwick, David Banner, and Lisa Arrindell. Jaylon landed his first series regular role at eight. True story: We both went out for the role of Xavier Moon; we both got the callback and casting reached out to see if I was willing to cut my hair. I said, “No.” A few days later, Jaylon got the news that he booked the role of Xavier Moon on “Zoe Ever After,” starring alongside Brandy and Dorian Missick. However, things were just getting started; our career continued to progress as we worked on several projects together and solo. Jaylon was even blessed to work with greats such as Oprah Winfrey, Anthony Mackie, Nia Long, and more. Fast forward to today, we are blessed to be real-life brothers, playing the roles of real-life brothers on screen by portraying Young Meech and Young Terry in the hit show “BMF.” We truly believe this is our calling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a “smooth road”, because you hear a lot of no’s in this industry and that can be hard for an actor, especially a child actor.
However, the no’s didn’t bother us because we believe, “What’s for you is for you.” As for Johnnie and I’s career, it’s been less of a “struggle” but more of God’s hand on our careers.
Therefore, our route and experiences have been more unconventional.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Not only are we actors best known for our most recent roles on BMF as Young Meech and Young Terry and Terror Lake Drive (season three) as Jacob and Hendrix, but we’re also Christian Hip Hop recording artists known as JMGBOYZ. Inspired by our love for God, music, and artists such as V. Rose and Flame, we chose to pursue this genre. Our goal is to give the people the beat they’re looking for and the message they need. We call it “Food for the soul”. Looking back, I would have to say our proudest moment as recording artists was having the opportunity to remix our song “Peace of Mind ” with one of the very artist who inspired us to become recording artists. This remix came 10 years after we released our first single. For those that don’t know, the number ten means testimony. And trust me, how being able to work with V. Rose came to be, was definitely a testimony! This is what Jaylon meant when he talked about God having his hand on our career and our path being unconventional at times. As actors, I would have to say we’re most proud of the fact that we get to walk this journey side by side as brothers and best friends.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Most people don’t know this about Jaylon and me, but we absolutely love anime. We grew up watching all the classic ones, such as Pokémon, Yu-gi-oh, Beyblades, and Bakugan. We’re also sports fanatics. Lastly, there is something else people don’t know about us: Jaylon started college at 16, and I started college at 15. I graduated high school with my diploma and college with my associate degree in 2023 at the age of 17.
Jaylon is on track to do the same. In fact, we’ll walk the stage together in 2025, graduating from Albany State University. I’ll be 19, receiving my bachelor’s degree, and Jaylon will be 18, receiving his associate degree. Jaylon plans on going to Morehouse to get his bachelor’s degree. As for me, I may or may not go on to get my master’s degree, but I do know faith without work is dead, so we will continue to work towards elevating our career.
