Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Jenkins.
Hi Julia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a teenager I was always fascinated with tattoos, piercings and artistic expression. Attending college straight out of high school was not my first choice, but I started at KSU studying something I wasn’t passionate about. I lasted one semester before dropping out. After the initial height of Covid and seeing others dive into hobbies they had the time for, I began doing research and seriously practicing handpoking tattoos. First on synthetic material & myself, then coworkers, siblings, and now all my lovely clients that have found me over the years.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been a lot of ups and downs. I’ve made mistakes and learned from them over the last few years, with this job I truly feel like i’m always learning and improving. Even before I started tattooing, I had my own struggles with depression and anxiety. One thing I was worried about at the beginning was the social aspect of it. I can be anxious in social situations or meeting new people, but I quickly found out that this work introduces me to the coolest people! There’s always fun conversations, music, and laughing during my appointments 🙂
When my mental health may not be at its best, my mood is always lifted by the people that come into my little studio.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a handpoke tattoo artist! That means my process is machine-free and I create the tattoos by individual pokes with a needle instead of using a machine. I love to tattoo different subject matter and styles, but I’d say i’m most known for my delicate florals and ornamental designs and other fine line work. Many tattoo artists may start with handpoking and eventually move on to working with a machine. There are not as many artists using this method, and even less doing a style similar to mine, and that’s what I think sets me apart and has clients coming to me for artwork.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love doing trades with all kinds of artists! I also love that about this job. I’ve traded giving a tattoo for receiving one, for a custom nail set, a professional massage, and handmade items!
