Rising Stars: Meet Justin Walker of Atlanta, Auburn Ave.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Walker.

Justin Walker

Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2020 I moved to Atlanta from Alabama & began apprenticing at City of Ink Castleberry, where I learned the craft & the culture of tattooing. Luckily I didn’t have to pay for my apprenticeship , but I did work & have tasks in exchange for learning. While apprenticing I worked a part time job from 6am -2pm everyday, changed in the parking lot & drove to my apprenticeship where I could be there as late as 2am depending on the day. I did this for about a year & a half, before taking the leap in 2021 & becoming a full time artist. It was definitely worth it!

As of now, I’ve been a full time tattoo artist for 4 years. Still growing & still pushing myself. I have also designed & completed a few murals this year, including two at Dunwoody Springs Elementary. I want to do more around the city, in addition to my tattooing & other creative endeavors.

The journey had been amazing. I am proof that you can make a living off of your art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. Having faith is definitely a requirement. In yourself, in God, in your talent, in your vision. There are many times I’ve thought about getting a “real” job, but to me that would be settling.

In a lot of aspects I’m sure it would be easier, but I’m also sure I wouldn’t be happy. I’d rather work on my own dream than someone else’s.

The biggest struggle for me has been just moving here from Alabama. Gaining clients & consistent customers can be a slow process, especially since I didn’t know anyone when I moved here. Social media has helped a lot, but also word of mouth. I also have a lot of returning clients so I feel like that’s a good sign. I appreciate everyone who reaches out to me or refers me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a tattoo artist & creator. I specialize in bold, illustrative work. I love designs that will catch the attention of every eye.

I try to do a bit of everything, but in my own style. My art & tattoos usually include bold designs,
with fine-line details. I draw inspiration mostly from animation & modern art. Creating custom tattoos are my favorite, give me an idea & i’ll run with it!

I’m most proud of my ability to grow & evolve. I am constantly trying new things & never settle into being content or stagnant.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would suggest researching anyone you are interested in learning from. Look at websites & reviews before committing.

Ive found that using social media for its actual purpose helps. Comment on posts, interact with people & build a bit of a relationship. Then ask if they would be open to sharing advice or mentoring. Also make sure you’re serious about it & will put in the work.
