Rising Stars: Meet J’waye Covington of Atlanta, GA

Today we’d like to introduce you to J’waye Covington

Hi J’Waye, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Stonewall Sports is a community-based, nonprofit sports organization for LGBTQIA+ people and their allies. Founded in 2010 in Washington, D.C., it provides nonprofit, inclusive, low-cost, fun local sports leagues that are rooted in philanthropy and that give back to their communities. Stonewall Sports now has 27 chapters with the Atlanta chapter establishing in 2021 with its first kickball season. Stonewall Sports Atlanta has expanded to include volleyball, dodgeball, bowling, tennis, and darts. Stonewall Kickball ATL consisted of nearly 650 players participating on one of 33 teams in its Spring 2024 season.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Thanks to the trails blazed by the chapters of Stonewall Sports that came before us, we had a great template that helped us get started. Our biggest challenge has been scaling up as we have grown rapidly. We frequently revisit our policies, procedures and processes to ensure they serve our growing membership. This includes such tactical items as ensuring we have the right permits with Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation, identifying fields that have enough room for us and are available for all of the time we need, safe and reliable restroom access, and ample parking for cars and bikes and public transportation access.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Stonewall Kickball ATL, our primary goal is to foster a welcoming and safe environment for everyone who joins our league. We’re dedicated to creating a space that embodies inclusivity, comfort, and high-energy fun in the heart of Atlanta. Our mission extends beyond just running a successful sports league; we are committed to giving back to local nonprofit organizations whenever possible. We take immense pride in the positive contributions we’ve made across our sports programs over the years, embodying the true spirit of PRIDE and LOVE. As a social media lead, it’s an honor to showcase what Stonewall Kickball ATL stands for through photography and video. I’ve been working as a freelance photographer for several years, and collaborating with an organization that genuinely cares about its community has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. Capturing the passion and joy that infuse every aspect of our league has been a rewarding experience, and I’m thrilled to elevate our platform and demonstrate why Stonewall Kickball ATL is the ultimate place to be!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is our cherished Friday family nights. Each week, we would enjoy various activities, from renting a movie and ordering Chinese food to dining at the beloved Chili’s. Sometimes, my cousins would visit, and we’d have a blast playing Guitar Hero or singing along to our favorite Disney Channel musicals. These Friday nights were the highlight of my week, filling it with joy and so much love!
