Today we’d like to introduce you to Kam .
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, both of my parents played music around the house. As I grew older I started to find my own taste and feel for music. High school is when I was properly introduced to hip hop and rap; that’s when I heard Wayne for the first time on Dedication 3 and I was hooked. The first CD I bought with my own money was Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool; my preference ranged from westside artists like Game and Schoolboy Q to Up north rappers Juelz Santana and 50 Cent and sprinkle some midwest and southern rappers like Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Wale, J Cole and many more. Around the same time I was discovering so much new music, one of my good friends named Rudy (who passed away but had a huge part in getting me started) showed me a flyer talking about an after school program learning how to make music. He mentioned how I should go to the interview and try out. I was accepted into the program and was apart of the club for 2 years. I always loved music but being able to create a song and write to the beat and record it truly amazed me. By way of my mom, I’ve always had the skills of writing papers and essays. Learning how to write to melodies was a task that I enjoyed more than anything, and fast forward to today I still experience that same feeling every time I enter a session. There’s literally no better feeling.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been an easy journey at all. You have ups and downs but you gotta stay afloat when you making your dreams reality. I experienced some bad business early on when I got started and when things went left it made me stop for a few years. I’m blessed to have so many people around me, family and friends, who speak life and love into me. I know for myself I can be a perfectionist when it comes to my music, and working to change that has been a challenge. I’ve gotten in my own way a few times and missed out on opportunities when I was younger, but you live and you learn. My passion for music is indescribable, the energy I feel when I’m making music is amazing. I can’t see me doing anything else with my life and knowing that I can’t give up on my dreams. So wether rainy or sunny, the passion makes me remember why I do what I do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Besides being an independent artist, I also am a songwriter. If I had to name my top 3 songs, they’d be “Good Week”, “Too Smooth” and my latest single “BBA” off my upcoming project “Kan’t Take Us Nowhere (KTUN)” partnered with my brothers over at the KTUN Podcast. I’m most proud of my first project “Some Throwaways” that dropped in April 2020, because that project is what got me back to releasing music. When people give me comparisons of who I put them in mind of I always get J cole and Big Sean. I think the strongest part of my pen game is storytelling, I really know how to string things together. All my projects up to KTUN are put together with a certain feeling, energy or perspective in mind. I love when people tell me they listened to a project and it was well put together and they see the work and love I put into it. I’m able to see the bigger picture but I’m also able to sculpt and mold it into a new perspective, and I believe that’s what makes me different from other artists.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
One mantra I live by is “A closed mouth doesn’t get fed.” and it’s the truest thing when it comes to networking. You have to be able to sell yourself without losing yourself. Talking to people and just introducing yourself can grow into more than you think. I enjoy working with new artists and producers, I’m always reaching out when I hear a new artist and like their sound. Whether I’m giving compliments to their music or seeing how they do features, I always speak if I feel the urge to. Music is full of energy and if the music moves me I gotta acknowledge it.
