Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasia Sutton
Hi Kasia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After graduating college in Poland with a degree in tourism, I wanted to travel and see Western America. I had an amazing, unforgettable car trip all over the United States, visiting 21 national parks and surprisingly only 3 big cities; I always took my camera with me to document those special moments.
I started my photography 15 years ago with family portraits, and to this day, I have many loyal clients who I see every year to update their family pictures. But my main focus nowadays is on high school seniors and headshots, both individual and corporate. I’ve been admiring the trend of documenting and celebrating our seniors (I have one myself) before they go out into the big world. I wish to provide seniors and parents with a memorable experience and tangible products that they can cherish forever.
When I don’t work with seniors, I travel to different parts of Atlanta working with corporate businesses and providing headshots and event coverage.
In recent years, I’ve discovered a newfound hobby: sports-related photography, courtesy of my son’s passion for soccer. I volunteer at his school – Milton High School in Alpharetta, GA – where I cover school soccer games and other sports-related events that eventually became an extension of my business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Trying to run any business as a foreigner is not easy. There are language, social, and cultural barriers that all can create obstacles. Having two home countries can be great with all the extra possibilities, but I’ve always been split between my Polish and American identities.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I picked up my first camera at the age of 15 back in Poland and did a learning course where I discovered the darkroom and developed my black-and-white images. With film, you had to be very intentional while pressing the shutter. Everything mattered: the subject, the light, the camera settings, and the composition. There are no do-overs. The image I saw through the viewfinder had to be a perfect one. All of that made me very detail-oriented. Even with all the digital blessings today (including Photoshop that can fix almost anything), I’m a perfectionist on the photo set. I want the session to run easier for both me and my client.
My other characteristic is my introverted personality. Instead of fighting it in this typical people-focused field, I embraced it and ran it as a boutique-style business. It means serving a smaller number of people by guiding them thoroughly from the moment they first contacted me to the delivery of final products: heirloom albums, framed wall art portraits, folio boxes with fine art prints, and many other tangible photo products. I still deliver digital images but stress the importance of pictures existing on the walls of our houses.
