Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaviar Sundays.
Kaviar, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Grateful to share that I’m a Howard University alumna originally hailing from PG County, Maryland. I relocated here last summer amid the pandemic while living in Brooklyn, New York. In 2019, I took a leap of faith and started my entrepreneurial endeavors where I began rapping and seeking out acting roles full-time. To cover bills, I would work as a production assistant on small productions just trying to get a feel of NY, eventually falling in love with production as a whole. Prior to the world shutting down I worked on season 8 and the start of season 9 as a talent runner & art PA with Impractical Jokers. At this time, I had only released my first popular single Get the Pros and Test Run the EP. After such positive feedback, I wanted to continue to create but COVID-19 had New York in a chokehold.
June came and I knew that I would have to move soon so I had to decide exactly what that next move was going to be. I woke up from my sleep in mid June with one word in mind… Atlanta. I asked my mom for her opinion, she said supported the move and from there the search began. Within the next few days, I booked a flight to ATL for 4th of July weekend and let my friends know that I needed them to take me around to look for apartments.
I narrowed my search down to 4 or 5 apartments and made my mind up by the time I arrived back to New York. I moved to ATL in August and got right to work.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe every journey taken never has a smooth road. When things go too smoothly I tend to get suspicious. So in short, the answer is certainly no. Transitioning to a new city always takes a bit of time to settle in. Some of my struggles I’ve encountered along the way have been finding consistent production jobs, quality studios that have affordable pricing and really getting to know people who do the work I want to do.
I’m very fortunate to have some resources from when I lived in New Orleans to loop me in and give me sound advice on hopping on to sets here. Finding a quality studio that I can call home was one of my larger issues but as I’ve met more like minded artists and good studios came along with them. I’m looking forward to my second year here in Atlanta.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Whew. When people ask me what I do I always try to be concise yet brief. I am a Jane of All trades. I act, rap, model, style, design and develop content through a creative lens. Most of all I am a philanthropist. I specialize in acting and rapping as those are the career spaces I am most passionate about but am most proud of my philanthropic efforts. My non-profit Hoop For All is a 501(c)(3) that uses sporting events to provide financial aid to disadvantaged health patients from low income communities. We just held our 9th annual Hoop For Hope tournament and have worked with partners and sponsors like DC Parks & Recreations, Red Bull, Target, BallisLife, American Cancer Society, Under Armour and many more.
In 2019, we were able to raise over $11,000 and give away 8 scholarships in collaboration with Howard University’s ℅ 2014 in celebration of our 5 year anniversary. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I will be one of the first women to make a positive impact on and integrate the worlds of music, film & sports. I have a tenacity that many people lose as they age, mine only grows stronger.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Funny that you asked this after me mentioning the tenacity I have. My personality has afforded me a lot of opportunities of just being in the right place with the right attitude. I value first impressions so I always try to make mine unforgettable. Being outgoing and maintaining a positive energy is only one half of what I feel is most important to my success.
The other half is understanding that a good attitude will get you far but hard work and persistence will get you further. I look at every no as a chance to seek out new opportunities that are better aligned with where I am headed. Nothing happens by accident so I choose to manifest, work hard and follow my intuition to get me to my next phase of success. For me, a positive attitude and a flexible perspective have contributed most to my success because I know I will obtain everything that I seek.
