Rising Stars: Meet Kayla Hunt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Hunt.

Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m KRollin’ and I started singing and songwriting as a kid, I remember making my own songs and rhymes about little things like my friend group and family, and I’ve always used It as a form of expression. I remember feeling like I was meant to be on stage when I was able to sing in front of the congregation at church at six years old. Eventually, when I got to be about 12, I joined show choir at school and the rest was history. I would compete for solos, sing as an a cappella unit, and make renditions of some of the student’s favorite songs. From 12-16, I pretty much spent most of my time practicing in choir and my solos at home, but unfortunately I took some time off going into my senior year of high school to focus on sports I never got to play and picked It back up around my 3rd year in college.

The time off really took a toll not only on my creative expression but my vocal abilities as well and the fact I went through puberty didn’t help either, but I got invited to the studio by my cousin and I found out that I can add a little autotune and It was like I never left. I recorded and put out my first song not long after that (2019) and I knew that that’s what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. I started collaborating with my friends and family that also did music and fortunately enough, I’ve been blessed enough to continue to put out more and more as time progresses. In around 2020, I linked up with my current manager and long-time friend and along with his hard work, communication, and the grace of God, we’ve been achieving things my younger self couldn’t even imagine.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road at all, and being a team of two is extremely challenging, but somehow things have worked themselves out in the most rewarding way. One of my favorite but most stressful moments but fulfilling events was my video shoot for ‘Granted’. I won a free video shoot from poloshotit, and my duty was to facilitate my location, outfit, extras, and concept that I was going for in the video. It’s always been hard for me to ask for help from others especially when It comes to support of my passions and myself period, just based on what I’ve gone through as a kid and the idea that things could fall through at any moment, so I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone to create a video inviting photographers, behind the scene videographers, and extras to pull up yo my video shoot. I started scouting locations that I wanted to use to fulfill my vision, I was going for a diner and school girl vibes, but unfortunately every person I asked (even the black-owned businesses) denied me regardless if I was willing to pay or not. This went on for weeks and I started getting anxious about the outcome.

I couldn’t have a video shoot without a location, and I was embarrassed in advanced thinking I wouldn’t find a place. I found a school girl outfit right up my alley, had my close friend thatssisinailbar create a custom press-on set for the video shoot, and figured out my photographer and videographer. The only left was the location. I was driving by a diner one day running some errands and something told me to stop by; I asked the owner’s family member if I could potentially use the location and she mentioned she’d get back to me. It wasn’t until the night before I followed up and had to persuade the owner’s family to let me rent her time to supervise the shoot for a couple of hours and that morning I confirmed the location with everyone involved. I honestly dropped so many frustrated tears the couple of weeks it took me to plan out that video shoot, but It came out so beautiful and the shoot went so smoothly. I was grateful that I actually had a budget to spend on the extras in the video since I didn’t have to pay for the shoot itself and ultimately Polo did such an amazing job on the video and it’s one of my underrated videos on my channel I think.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer/songwriter, model, entrepreneur, and recording artist. I’m known mostly for the music and modeling aspect of my career. I’m most proud of my ability to create my own songs from beats and find melodies that sound really good, and my tone of voice is what I think sets me apart from most. I definitely carry an alto range and when I sing in my comfortable and strong range. It creates more of a melodic/siren sound regardless of the genre I decided to create a song in. Another thing that sets me apart is my drive, my tunnel vision, my goofy personality and humble mannerisms. I know that anything we have in life can be taken away at any given moment, so I live my life to enjoy It and be grateful for all the experiences and blessings that I’ve been gifted while I have It.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson that I’ve learned so far is that you just have to keep moving. Every day the sun is going to rise and set and you just have to make the best out of each day. The feelings are going to come and go, but it’s about how you bounce back from the adversity and make the best out of the cards that are dealt to you. There’s been plenty of times that I’ve felt overwhelmed or sick with imposter syndrome, and I had to realize that all the opportunities I’ve come across were not by coincidence and there’s a method to all the madness. I learned to utilize all the opportunities and radiate the confidence that the universe has given me and understand that I’m meant to be in the rooms that I’ve stepped foot in. If I decided to give up at the first inconvenience, then I wouldn’t have received all the blessings I have or felt as satisfied with the results I ended up with. That’s why I continue to just roll with the punches every day whether It be good or bad.
