Rising Stars: Meet Kendra Nicole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Nicole.

Kendra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
OMG, two years into business and I still can’t believe I’m doing what I LOVE, which is being a master motivator to women and helping them to heal mentally, spiritually and physically through my business, ThinkThiccFitness. I literally started in my living room just recording my workouts and being hard on myself with the finished product and then I started having fun with my workouts and fully enjoying what I do. By changing and healing the way I think, my spirit and then my physical strength began to shape and evolve into the woman I am today.

The journey was and is not easy, especially being a plus-size woman of color in fitness, by the world’s standards I am not the norm. Now I am breaking barriers and helping change women’s lives.

After growing up and hearing “you’re cute but chunky” or “you’re cute for a dark skin girl” those words affected my mental and I carried them silently for years. Not knowing those words shaped the way I viewed myself and self-worth. For years, I believed I had to prove my worth to others, whether that was throughout my friendships or imitate relationships. It wasn’t until my late 20’s that I realized my worth and started to mentally change the way I viewed myself and how I wanted to commit more to myself. I started with Chakra mediations and words of affirmation, then I added journaling. Before I knew it those small steps became the gateway to releasing different levels of my mind and spirit. Then including a fitness routine, I saw my body growing and glowing. The glow was different.

That GLOW is what ThinkThiccFitness teaches women in my Sweat and Smile 4-week training session. That no matter what shape or size you are, you have to embrace that no matter what. I coach women to stand tall like the beautiful sunflower that they are so that they can grow to their fullest potential.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Heck no, the road has not been smooth. There have been obstacles that I have faced while building my brand. Mainly breaking barriers in a market that most people already have this preconceived notion on what “fit” is. Being that I use social media as my initial form of engagement to reach potential clients, I have to make sure I am mastering my craft and showing up on a daily.

That can be difficult at times, especially when there are hundreds of fitness accounts, the algorithms may be against me, and having the time to post daily and be engaged. Currently, I still work full time, I record all my workouts and edit them myself and have a tight schedule to make sure I’m posting. Before I started my business, I rarely engaged in social media, so to mentally switch and place action behind that is a struggle for me at times. I constantly remind myself it’s bigger than me and someone is always watching and waiting for me.

Once I have a come to Jesus meeting with myself and making sure to show up and out for the women who need me, then comes what I like to call the “social media you have to joking right” obstacles. This includes comments from trolls and DMs from private accounts, facing the algorithms, naysayers, and sadly women who aren’t ready to shift their mindset to take the first steps to changing their lives. For myself, that’s the BIGGEST obstacle that I face, because I can hear and see the pain that they are in and I want to just fix their problems immediately, but that is when I recognize it won’t matter until they are ready for the change.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a certified personal trainer, though I refer to myself as a master motivator wellness coach. I teach women to embrace themselves no matter what shape or size. I focus on the mind, spirit and body to provide a sustainable lifestyle change. This way they are saving their lives and the lives of those around them while breaking unhealthy generational cycles.

I am most known for my Sweat and Smile Program, better known as S.A.S. This program is four weeks of personal training, whether it’s group or one on one. I do all the workouts with my clients and motivate them to push through their obstacles while in our sessions and outside of the sessions in my private Facebook community. My S.A.S Beauties know I am most always smiling in my videos and smiling even during a life or a casual conversation.

I am most proud of the fact that I am not offering what other wellness/fitness coaches are nor do I look like a good 80 % of them. I am helping women heal from within first and foremost by understanding and having gone through similar struggles, I am relatable. I understand and I will push you to where you deserve to be mentally, spiritually and physically.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I would say I was talkative, lol. Which as I have gotten older, I am still talkative, but I listen more than I speak. I have always had a love for reading. I am constantly purchasing books or looking up information to educate myself on. I had many interests growing up; drawing, writing poems in my journal, riding my bike, watching scary movies and I off and on did something physical, so looking back I was setting myself up for the path I am now. I remember wanting to be a teacher, so I could help people, and, in a sense, I am educating women now.
