Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Nelson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in the beautiful Long Beach, CA.
Photography started as an outlet for me during High School. At the time my family was facing homelessness; we were in and out of a local Motel 6 and slept in our car. My head was always in the clouds dreaming of what I knew my life would look like. So to keep myself from getting into the wrong things I started shooting as an escape.
My senior year of High School in 2011 I was able to have one elective and I chose photography. That’s where I developed the skills and learned the basics about rule of thirds, photoshop and lighting. I would go home and practice and apply everything I learned. It then became like art; a passion.
The name New Horizon Photography came from the fact that each day brings a new horizon. If you pay attention, the sky looks different every day when the sun sets. Through my work, I aim to Create, Connect and Inspire others as well as the next generation. They too can have an escape, for many aren’t athletic but with Photography there’s always a place to excel.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, there were many times I wanted to hang up the camera. Comparison is your greatest enemy, it will cause you to begin to create like everyone else and shoot like everyone else. I even had to sell my camera at one point to pay off debt. In these moments though I was always reminded by fellow creators of the gift I have and that kept me going.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love working with other business and brands to help build up what it is that they do via Social Media. I’m most proud of the fact that I’m not like every other shooter who only does family pictures etc. What sets me apart is my eye and being able to shoot at any given place and time.
