Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Hill
Hi Kristin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Honestly, my story is still just beginning. My business is about eight months old and growing every day. If I were to give it a timeline, I’d say it started as a childhood passion that reignited during my adult search for self-discovery.
As a kid, I was always experimenting—making perfume, beading, playing instruments like the drums and clarinet, and even writing. Over time, my interests expanded into costuming and other creative outlets. But as life went on, I got caught up in the world’s expectations, losing touch with my sense of expression and my voice. I had my job, my new house, and friends, but my mental health was struggling.
While many found their passions during the pandemic, mine came afterward, at my lowest point. One day, I saw a video of a beautiful resin table being made, and something clicked. I thought, hmmm, I want to try. I bought resin and a few molds and began experimenting. What started as casual dabbling sparked a fire within me.
I was excited again. I felt like I was expressing myself, giving life to the little ideas in my head, giving myself the power and freedom to create, and I had a voice that grew louder with every piece I made. My resin earrings and necklaces grew to beads and metals. My simple pours became mosaics, and I started to grab other mediums, such as clay. Then, during a trip to Greece, I had the idea that I wanted to start a handmade craft business. I wouldn’t choose one product type because I don’t believe in being put in a specific box or category. I wanted to create whatever my mind, heart, and hands desired. Over this trip, I reflected a lot, and out of it came Persephone’s Treasure Chest.
I chose the name Persephone’s Treasure Chest because, to me, Persephone embodies duality, resilience, and beauty—the power in one’s contradictions despite what expectations others or the world may have in store for you. Persephone’s Treasure Chest was born from a desire to celebrate the complexities of the human spirit. Inspired by Persephone, the goddess of spring and queen of the underworld, my brand embodies the blend of light and dark. My mission is to empower you to embrace all aspects of yourself and recognize your beauty and strength. Every piece created is a personal treasure, crafted with care and intention to resonate with your unique essence.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! Honestly, I felt and still feel like I have no idea what I’m doing sometimes. My biggest challenge has been overcoming self-doubt. I remember telling a friend about my success at my first few markets, and she said, “Why do you sound so shocked that people like your stuff?” But I was shocked.
Selling something you’ve created—something that lived in your head—makes you feel vulnerable. I’m not a salesperson; my Girl Scout days were proof of that. But people actually liked my little treasures. Over time, I’ve become more confident. Now, I tell myself: If even one person resonates with my creations, that’s a win.
Another struggle has been figuring out how to run a business. I joined the Gurl 2 Gurl Networking group to learn from other women in my community, and it’s been amazing. These women inspire me every day with their stories and support, and I’m so grateful to have them on this journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Persephone’s Treasure Chest, I create unique, personal, handcrafted treasures designed to empower people to embrace their true selves. Each piece celebrates beauty, power, resilience, and the wonderful contradictions that make you who you are.
In a nutshell, I make jewelry, décor, cosplay pieces, and other novelties. Whatever I dream up, I want to create. You can never be quite sure what you’ll find. I am not really known for anything just yet because I am new, and that is actually pretty exciting. I have so many plans for Persephone’s Treasure Chest. I’ve been playing with mixing materials and aesthetics, learning new skills, and collaborating with some other creative souls.
What sets me apart is that I don’t have a specialty. I refuse to put myself—or anyone else—into a box. I know it’s wise to niche down, but Persephone’s Treasure Chest is about breaking free from limitations. You don’t have to choose between your light and dark or between your interests and passions. My vision is a world where everyone embraces their full spectrum of selves, recognizing their inherent beauty and strength. Through these handcrafted treasures, I want to inspire confidence, individuality, and the courage to break free from societal molds.
The most proud moments are when shoppers say, “I feel like this was made just for me.” That’s what it’s all about—creating pieces that connect on a personal level.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just go for it. Jump in and believe in yourself. You’re capable of so much more than you think, and your ideas are worth sharing. Yes, others may be doing something similar, but if it comes from your heart, you’ll find your audience and still stand out.
If I could go back, I’d tell myself to work on time management. Balancing a full-time job (which I love), a podcast that is also new this past year (check out Nerdy Nectar Chronicles!), and countless hobbies have been exhausting. But I’ve realized it’s not that I’m doing too much—it’s that I’m still figuring out my process.
This year, my goal is to lean on my resources, stop playing small, and fully embrace what I’ve built. So, to anyone just starting out, I say trust yourself, be kind to yourself, and don’t be afraid to dream big.
