Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Morgan.
Hi Kyle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am the owner of Morgan Studios. Morgan studios is a company that focuses on producing cutting edge cinematography for feature films, documentaries, commercials and music videos. I was initially just a comic book artist wanting to get my stories out. Then after seeing how bad adaptations were done, I decided to learn filmmaking myself to film my own stories. I’ve had the film bug ever since! I quit my janitorial job in 2015 in order to pursue film full-time. I am self-taught, I lived with a friend on a couch while I learned cinematography. My family didn’t have the funds to send me to the college I wanted to go to, so early on I knew I had to find my own way. Since then I’m very thankful and proud to say Morgan Studios has had work in Times Square, and many films I got to be cinematographer for have become fan favorites like “The Dirty D, He Played Me, Karma, Undying Love and Watch Your Back” I’ve always wanted to inspire others to go for their dreams even when the odds are against them. I’ve loved seeing the transformation of my city, where people are looking to shoot movies instead of another. I hope to see more of that as we create more content.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’d say some of the biggest struggles have been self-caused. Self-doubt is a killer to many people’s dreams. A lot of the problems I’ve caused myself by not being present in the moment and wanting the moment to be a specific way. And listening to other opinions instead of sticking to my own vision. Many times, the vision was given to you and only you, so you have to move as if only you can see the finish line.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in transforming ideas to reality! I’m known for many indie film titles in the black community. I’d say I’m most proud of the work I do with nonprofits. Morgan Studios has made videos that have raised money for life-saving surgeries, a memorial museum for those who were harmed due to hate crimes, and the work we do with Jay Towers. Every year, we fill a plane up of kids with terminal illnesses and take them and their families for an unforgettable vacation to Disney! Seeing the moments that’ll last a lifetime for others makes it all worth it. I believe what sets me apart from others is my spirit. I’m always thinking about how my work can improve the quality of someone’s life and how we can create social change.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me is my family. That’s my blood family and soul family! To be able to remove any barriers for them on their journey always brings me joy.
