Rising Stars: Meet Lisa Motto of Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Motto

Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My college degrees were in Design, Illustration and Painting. After spending 35 years in the Design business, most recently as Design Director for a Fortune 500 company, I now focus my creative efforts exclusively on Oil Painting as of roughly 6 years ago, and haven’t looked back since. I try to take 1 to 3 Oil Painting Workshops each year around the world, and have latched onto my primary mentors at this stage.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While painting and drawing seem to have come natural to me, it has taken some work to figure out my preferred approach, subject matter(s) style and direction, especially as I can get bored easily and prefer not to become pigeon holed. This was tough since most painters have a niche.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work exclusively in Oils now, as I’ve found Oil Painting to be the most versatile, interesting and forgiving medium available. Oils can be manipulated to be as fast or as slow drying as needed to fit the needs of the painting. One can work in alla prima, in layers, impasto, dry brush, reveal under painting, with palette knife, splatter solvents, your fingers or whatever object is lying around! The possibilities are endless depending on the desired effect. You are limited only by your imagination.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Developing a style that is both loose and tight simultaneously. The look should be both accurate and effortless. It should appear as though a few almost lucky, well placed strokes landing in the perfect position with just the right warm or cool lighting effect on color and object based on time of day, luminance and mood. The painting should evoke emotion for the viewer whether that is obvious to others or not.
