Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa White.
Hi Lisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a business founder Baltimore native, mom of three, grandmother of six, writer/editor, and supporter and lover of the Arts, with music being at the top of the Arts list.
Several genres of music provide my life’s soundtrack. No matter what mood I’m in or what situations I’m working through, music stands as a welcoming conduit with dance being the main outlet.
After high school I waited a year before attending college at Coppin State College, now University, and found a crew my of friends who like me, loved music. We partied at the dances at school and one of our crew was a DJ Al Staton, we went to friend’s houses or apartment parties where the DJ played House Music. One of my favorite memories is of the times we would congregate at one particular McDonald’s parking in West Baltimore; car loads of college kids converging on the parking lot, all radios tuned to WEAA, Morgan State University radio to listen to and dance to the sounds of The Underground Experience with DJ Pope and DJ Oji blessing is with House Music from 7-12 midnight! We would just lose ourselves in the thumping bass and high hats; it was magical. Singing off key the lyrics that spoke of love, unity, being free to just be. We would dance our cares away spinning strutting, jumping all in the Spirit of House…Love, receiving it, and spreading it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As for the challenges, I can look and see them as lessons for myself on this journey. In retrospect, being able to convey ideas from thought to inception posed a challenge in that I could see the end of the project, however, being connected with the resources needed was challenging. What I have learned is the “No’s” I would hear or the “I can’t see that working” pushed me to dig deep for new avenues to get projects completed. What has since transpired is my confidence level has elevated with every project that I have completed. It’s hasn’t been easy, however not impossible!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Today, I am involved with a locally founded organization named The Women of House Music Collective, created by another Baltimore native, Jaye Hunnie, serving as a board member. This collective is comprised of House Music Enthusiasts in all capacities, from DJs to promoters to dancers, and producers where we have brunches and community events. Along with that, I am a contributing writer and editor for Deep House Magazine, founded by DJ George Aiken, based out of New Jersey. And just recently I have been accepted as an intern with Real Chicks Rock!, founded by Michelle Dawes-Birt. She herself is a member of the House Music community in full force! These three entities are affording me opportunities to do some of the creative work that I love while I get to work and party with great people that embody The House Spirit and listen to some fantastic music!
I am proud of my writing, especially for a genre of music that grew up with me and being published as a writer. Getting to interview some of my favorite players in this House Music scene, I am proud of the agency I founded and was operating with my youngest daughter, also my first client, where opportunities were presented to people in the fashion modeling arena that may not have otherwise come their way. I love to connect creatives with others, and then the connection brings forth good things.
I guess what sets me apart from others is when I am involved in a project, I will get in, ask what needs to be done and do it or just by observation, suggest where I can assist, and just get to work.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Starting starts with one step, making the first move even if it scares me. Then take the next one and so on. Being intentional with my self care so I can be present and available for the people who need me.
