Rising Stars: Meet Lorenzo McClinton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorenzo McClinton.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As far as music goes, music has always been my thing my entire life, I taught myself how to play piano at age 11 by ear watching YouTube videos. Even coming up through school, I’ve been in band and chorus since about the 4th grade so I got a pretty good ear for music… speed it up to current time, 2018 springtime I was homeless, I moved out of my mom’s crib and said f*ck it ima find a way to get it on my own and struggled for a longggg time place to place, car to car flor to floor hotel to hotel and so on, but one day my childhood friend state was like come stay with me bro I gotchu and I went where he was started running up some money and stopped looking back and I been grinding hard ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest struggles was self-inflicted. I was sheltered most of my life so when I turned 18, I said f*ck it and hit the streets, back at the time, I was young n dumb so I figured it was the right thing to do… led to homelessness for about a year and a half till I finally got my grind right and got a stable place of living. I could’ve easily went to go stay with ma dukes or somebody but I’m stubborn. I don’t like asking people for shit; I’m real proud of saying I did a lot of shit in my own… also when COVID just started kicking in early 2020, I was just about to go perform in my biggest showcase yet SXSW AUSTIN TEXAS but it was canceled so yea that kinda hurt but still all n all I kept pushing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a self-taught pianist, artist and songwriter. I AM NOT A RAPPER. I AM AN ARTIST. THAT’S WHY I EMPHASIZED my name as ZO THE ARTIST. I have the ability to paint scenery and set the tone of the room with my music and melodies. Lately, I have been specializing in harmonizing capturing attention with simple bars and complex melodies. I’m most proud of the fact that my Fan base really appreciates my music, my mom is my biggest supporter. She literally only listens to my music on repeat so it means a great deal to me. It lets me know how good my music is cause she def has an older soul which makes me feel like I make great music. What sets me apart from most artists it’s that all my music is genuinely felt, created to feel some type of home or void that I felt and my heart. Any time I make music, it’s about something I FELT. It’s always real; it always has substance. I don’t believe in making noise in a beat that’s not music.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
When it comes to taking risk, I say take them cause if you don’t, you lose anyway. Just do your research! Make sure the risk is worth it. One of the biggest risks I took so far wasn’t even really a risk, more like an investment. I haven’t jumped too far out there yet but I’m when the time cause I’ll jump if need be but the most I’ve done so far is spent 2500 on a music video, coming soon! I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for!

Pricing:

  • For hooks I charge 100
  • For verses I charge 150
