Rising Stars: Meet Lori Lindsey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Lindsey. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Lori Lindsey

In 1981, there was a determined young woman, Lori, who embarked on a post-secondary journey at Clark College, majoring in Computer Science with a math minor. She was a bright student with a passion for science and a vision for her future. In 1986, Lori proudly graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science, ready to apply her knowledge and skills to take on the world. Lori’s journey led her into the corporate world and later, the Local Government, where she served as a Financial  Systems Manager for an impressive 21 years. She excelled in her career, climbing the ladder with hard work and dedication. But as time passed, she began to reflect on her life and her values.

In 2010, she noticed that her once healthy head of hair was changing due to the application of harsh chemicals, aging, etc. She decided to live a healthier lifestyle which included a transformation from chemically relaxed hair to embracing her natural curls. This decision was ahead of its time, as the concept of “being natural” had not yet gained widespread popularity.

Lori’s transition to natural hair was met with skepticism and even resistance from those around her. However, she remained undeterred. Drawing inspiration from her faith and her scientific background, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Lori started experimenting with different formulations to create products that catered to her unique hair needs.

In 2011, she penned a self-care book titled “The Root of the Matter,” which became a guide for individuals like her who were on their natural hair journey. Her book provided valuable insights and tips on maintaining healthy, natural hair.

Lori found out she was not alone in her mission; family supported and inspired her. Among them was her son, Joshua, an engineer with a strong background in chemistry. Together, they worked tirelessly to perfect Lori’s hair care formulations. Their combined knowledge and forward-thinking approach led to innovative solutions for everyday hair and skin problems.

In 2011, Lori joined forces with her business partner, Kim Miller, to launch The Natural Root LLC, a company dedicated to the philosophy that “Natural is Everything.” Their vision was to create products with ingredients that customers could easily identify, understand, and trust. Each product was meticulously handcrafted in small batches, using only all-natural ingredients.

With divine blessings and unwavering determination, their business flourished. The Natural Root products were embraced in esteemed natural health stores like Sevananda Foods, The Herb Store in Vinings, and the Nubian Bookstore. Additionally, they expanded their reach through online sales, connecting with customers worldwide via the company’s website.

The product line continued to grow and diversify. This duo offered over 8 Gourmet Shea Butters, a Honey Conditioner, a Gourmet Clay Detox, a Vegan line, a Men’s line, and specialized products for individuals with locs. Their dedication to quality and authenticity resonated with customers, making The Natural Root a household name in the natural hair care community.

But Lori’s vision didn’t stop at creating exceptional products. She wanted to give back to her community. In an admirable move, The Natural Root began offering services to adopted and foster families, helping them navigate the complexities of child haircare and promoting hair positivity among children.

As time passed, Lori’s journey from a college student at Clark College to wife and mother to a successful entrepreneur was an inspiring testament to the power of passion, faith, and family. The Natural Root’s commitment to natural ingredients, quality, and community outreach continued to make it a force for good in the world of hair, skin and self-care. Lori’s legacy will forever be etched in the hearts and curls of those she has touched along the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The obstacles first:
Working a full-time job while starting a new business.
Losing our first big account with Walgreens.
Navigating life through a divorce after 28 years of marriage.
pivoting the business from targeting our products to be on the shelf from the chain and big box stores to Health foods Stores, Small black-owned businesses, bookstores, salons & barber; health food grocery stores.
I began my business at the seasoned age of 48, and now retired at 61, it’s a challenge to remain reverent in an ever-changing technical and social media world. The road definitely was not smooth nor for the faint at heart.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At The Natural Root, Lori’s mission is clear: to identify problems and create solutions. In a world filled with complex and potentially harmful ingredients, Lori’s dedication to crafting simple, natural, and nourishing solutions is truly remarkable.

One of her proudest achievements is the ability to transform adversity and countless rejections into a thriving business. Despite hearing “no” a thousand times, Lori’s faith and determination allowed her to see her dream of a product line dedicated to health come to life. She attributes her success to her unwavering faith in God and the guidance she receives from Him.
