Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Risqué.
Hi Lucy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The world of glamour, art, and beauty came to me in the form of stripper heels and ones on the stage. Being cash-strapped and needing to do something with my idle hands led me to put my talents of dance, conversation, and obtaining the male gaze to good use. Within couple of years of entering the nightlife community, I knew that I wanted to have a grander purpose and legacy left behind. I enjoy the lights, attention, and — of course — the money; yet I didn’t want late nights and stray ones to be the only things I was remembered and forgotten for. I knew of the showgirls in Las Vegas, have heard of the Folies Bergère in Paris, and grew up with the sex symbols and icons of the 90’s. I chose to pursue this form of entertainment and theatrics through the art of burlesque.
My first introduction was as a body paint model for a large, touring, all-Black burlesque show. I was sold after the first night! I continued my journey with that show for some time before I branched out to booking my own shows. Fast forward a few years later and I had grown to, not only book burlesque shows, but also build a model portfolio, collaborate with various other artists while hosting intimate game nights and events. The growth was amazing, and I have encountered so many incredible individuals. Saying “yes” to the right opportunities to place me closer to my end goals has always been my method of movement. At times, there may be hurdles and challenges that have distracted me but never sullied my overall determination. I look forward to meeting me in 10 years and seeing what growth I have experienced by then!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Grow through it, don’t go through it. That has been my new motto for all challenges and obstacles that I have faced. Some have been purely the work of outside forces, while others have been the result of my own self-sabotage. Both require the strength to learn what is needed to proceed forth and grow. Dealing with wanting to fit into a certain “look” or “image” and experiencing the “love” from a toxic partner have been a few of the strains my path has come across. There comes a point where the self-love and self-determination must kick in and I chose to thrive, not be a host to parasites or “imposter syndrome”.
Knowing that there are a hundred of types of bread doesn’t stop the next bread maker from baking theirs and being the best. Same goes for my own plights. I could have chosen to be stuck in molds or ideas others had about myself, my image, and my brand or I could take control and be the powerhouse I have always imagined myself to be. The latter came. Likewise, I knew I couldn’t allow the pain of someone else to be something of my own, especially when proper healing was nowhere in sight. I had a choice to make: continue to stay with someone– no matter how much I loved them– and be stifled into nothing after working so hard to achieve what I had; or leave it all and rebuild the strength I knew still lived within and get back on course to become the best me. Well, I don’t think I made a bad decision in either case.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Lucy Risqué is the saint of debauchery and the “21st century Eartha Kitt” of burlesque. She is a budding fire eater, stripper/lap dance extraordinaire, superb stage & event manager, a brilliant hostess, and a newly established event curator. There are many levels of pleasure and fun that she may bring and passion to keep it burning. “The one with the million dollars eyes” has been known to dazzle, tempt and tease crowds all along the east coast. There is no energy and being like the ever-evolving Lucy Risqué!
Some of my most notable accomplishments as Lucy Risqué have been winning 1st place in Raleigh, NC for Improv Burlesque in 2018, stage managing an awards ceremony for the Black and Latino Filmmakers Coalition, and continuing to grow my audience authentically. Providing energy, talent, and entertainment that shifts thinking while evoking positivity is something that I strive for. I am continually creating my own realities of pleasure. This is what keeps me going forth to achieve much more.
How do you define success?
The pleasures of obtaining that which makes you feel pure joy and happiness in the world. Sometimes it’s material. Sometimes it’s inexplicable. All the time, it’s the driving force behind one’s capacity to show passion.
