Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Miller.
Hi Makayla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My initial introduction into photography was during my senior year of high school. I took an Audio Video & Tech class and expressed my interest and love for photography to my teacher. I’ll never forget him, his name was Mr. Rooks. He would let me use his personal DSLR camera to shoot for the school’s news and yearbook, and from then on I always had a camera in my hands.
Once I got to college, I decided to take it more seriously and turned it into a side hustle to keep some money in my pockets. Being a major in multimedia communications, I was also studying the ins and outs of production as well. My studies and my drive for growth within my skills really motivated me to fully become a freelance photographer, then KaySnapped Photography was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been anything but a smooth road. Some of my biggest struggles are imposter syndrome, comparing myself to others and having anxiety. I have a terrible habit of doubting myself and my work and that leads to me comparing my work to that of my peers. It’s definitely something I’m working on because I know I’m highly capable of producing amazing art, and I should be the last person that gets in my way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a freelance photographer and I don’t think I have a specialty. I love shooting just about everything from portraits to candids to conceptual pieces and events. I think I’m just in love with the craft in all aspects and the process of growing within my work.
When it comes to my work, I’m most proud of my authenticity. I like to not only bring my own ideas to life but I love collaborating with new people and being able to create something we both love. I like to give my clients an all-around creative experience so I’m definitely proud of that. Giving people an experience I would want myself goes a very long way.
I believe what sets me apart is my eye. I think a lot of new photographers today get into the business because of how lucrative it is, and it’s easy to tell them apart from those have a true passion for it. I’ve always liked taking the scenic routes or documentaries and art in general, so that plays a major role in the kind of photography I like and I like to create.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The one person that comes to mind is my granddad. He passed down his film camera to me and I still use it to this day. He and my grandmother also bought me my very first professional DSLR camera as well. Without them doing that, I don’t know if I would’ve taken that leap on my own. They have always been so supportive of my dreams and my work and it means everything.
