Rising Stars: Meet Maky Conley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maky Conley.

Hi Maky, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My clothing brand has always been a lingering idea from 2017, I have always been into fashion inspired by Virgil Abloh and his different takes on Pyrex Vision, Been Trill, and Off-White. Off-white stood out to me the most because of its luxury streetwear aesthetic. It was a major inspiration for my journey. Graphic design as always been a second home for me, I have been into graphic designing ever since my freshman year. Fast forward to 2020, I purchased a sewing machine and began to sew and I could not stay away from the sewing machine. I actually took the leap of faith and started my clothing Brand “Local Hipster” in 2021 with the knowledge and skills I’ve gained in the past four years. I would stay up late nights either making new designs or a new article of clothing because it would bring me a peace of mind and I love doing it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is never a smooth road being a creative in my opinion, I struggle with creative block frequently, sometimes it takes me multiple days to come up with new ideas. I often am much harder on myself when it comes to my work and I struggle to try to make everything perfect, I have to tell myself that I get better day by day. I am still in the beginning phase of my brand so I struggle with me putting my pieces out there and very few people or nobody buys them, but I try not to let that stop me because this is something that I love to do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a clothing brand called Local Hipster, I specialize in graphic design and sewing. I am most proud of the things I create on a daily basis and the fact that I better my skills more and more with every new project. I think what sets me apart from others would be my work ethic and the type of person I am. Most people would describe me as a very kind person who has so much creative talent.

How do you define success?
I define success as being better than your previous self, I believe that success doesn’t come from physical gain or status but it comes from how you accomplish the goals you create and the improvement on your journey.
