Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Chastain.
Hi Marissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Calhoun, GA. I’ve always loved being creative and had a passion for the arts, so I pursued a degree in Art/Art Education with specialty in painting from the University of Georgia. My college selection process wasn’t the long, drawn-out, tormented affair as it’s often depicted. I didn’t know what I really wanted to do and my two best friends were going to UGA, so I followed suite. As I adjusted to college life, I fell in love with Athens. I had never imagined a community with such a vibrant music and arts culture. So when I graduated college, I couldn’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be. Now, 15 years later, this town is my home and has given me a sense of community that I am beyond grateful for.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My career trajectory wasn’t what I imagined when I started pursuing a degree in the arts, but I’m so thankful for the twists, turns, and leaps of faith that led me to my current job with the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce. In this role, I have the privilege of meeting amazing Athenians every day. I realized along the way that my passion was in serving the community through some of the other things I love to do, like event planning, marketing, designing, and connecting people. I learned how to lean into that sense of community when I started volunteer work in 2016 with Athenspets, the nonprofit organization that supports the Athens-Clarke County Animal Shelter. Through the advocate program, fostering, and volunteering with fundraising events, I learned how impactful those experiences could be, not only for the people and animals we were working with but also for me. Since then, I’ve been able to volunteer with so many amazing organizations here in Athens including service as Vice President of Athens Pride + Queer Collective!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Every Chamber of Commerce is different, and I’m extremely proud that ours is one that focuses on a robust program of work and fostering connections in our community. Our work is focused on five areas: Education/Workforce Development, Business Development, Public Policy, Special Events, and Membership. With over 800 business and nonprofit members, we’re able to collaborate with community members toward a shared vision of a brighter tomorrow. One of our newly rebranded programs that I am really excited about is Women Who Work. Our committee of amazing working women helped facilitate a new take on the former Women in Business program. The group encourages women to bring their authentic selves, be a resource for one another, and have a commitment to developing community.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
There have been so many people who have supported me and cheered me along in my journey that it would be impossible to list them all. I am incredibly lucky to have a group of friends that have been my biggest supporters since we were in elementary school together. I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be where I am today without their unconditional love and support. My family, coworkers, fellow board members, and friends are absolutely the most essential part of my story and I’m thankful every day to be surrounded by so much love.
