Rising Stars: Meet Mary Pratt of Lawrenceville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Pratt

Hi Mary, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
At five, I knew I was an artist. Sketching became my concentration. Telephone books were adorned with various doodles as I chatted with friends on the rotary phone.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is nothing smooth or without struggle following the artist journey. It’s uphill, downhill, and sometimes it seems to stand still. Approximately every ten years I reinvent myself. Always, I am learning. I consider myself a student of the arts. There was a time I had considered finding a new career. That day, I arrived home having made the decision to pursue a more lucrative position. Opening my mail I found a letter from a gallery in Knoxville, Tennessee asking if I was interested in bringing my work to their gallery. That was the day I understood I was on the right track and to never give up.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work spans many themes and creative processes. Mostly I am proud of the large mural work I’ve been commissioned to paint. As a woman, I have no fear painting large murals on scaffolding. I actually love working large and this talent sets me apart from others.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I prefer starting with a sketch using paint directly on to the wall, canvas, etc. Sometimes a preliminary sketch is needed so I’m capable of presenting that. Painting directly on the surface enhances creativity and thus the outcome of the piece.
