Rising Stars: Meet Mayola Ross

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayola Ross.

Mayola Ross

Hi Mayola, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in Orlando, FL December 20th, 1986 Mother Margit Lindo (German) & Father Harold Ross (Jamaican). I have five siblings, I’m the second to last child. I’m a proud mother of three beautiful, amazing girls. I love God with all of my heart, I know that he is the reason I have made it thus far on my journey that we call LIFE. I’ve always been in love with music of all genres growing up we would always play old-school/ reggae music throughout the house… I gravitated to music pretty quickly at a young age. I started writing music in my early teens, doing rap battles under the street lights playing around. I began to take music more seriously in my early 20s. I started going to the studio recording, doing shows traveling, and promoting my music wherever and whenever an opportunity presented itself. In the early 2000s, God placed conviction in my heart in regard to my image, the type of music I was putting out into the streets, and my lifestyle choices. I tried for the longest to ignore what I felt on the inside but I could no longer buck the calling on my life. I knew the way I was living at the time was very misleading, especially to the younger generation.

In 2010, I declined two major deals, one was with a Major Record Label and the other was a reality TV show. After declining those offers I decided to take a step back in regards to writing music doing shows etc. And went on a quest to find MYSELF. I started attending church and re-dedicated my life to Christ. I began a new chapter of my life leaving music behind, even though it was always my first love . In 2020 I felt a strong urge and desire to begin writing again this time it was a whole new tune a different vibe, a message. If I had to describe the music I write now, I would say that it is Empowering, Motivational, and Relatable. It’s my story of resilience on an instrument. My vision is to pour back into the streets and be the person that I wish I had grown up.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been challenging, unlearning old ways, traditions, habits, changing my perspective, and steering more towards God made Vs Self made. Change is never easy, but is necessary. In order to do something you’ve never done, you’ve got to become someone you’ve never been – Les Brown.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
You can find some of my work on YouTube I just recently started putting out music as well as videos @YolaIamHer be sure to like and subscribe.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a Tom boy at heart, didn’t mind getting dirty always hanging with the fellas. I enjoyed playing football, baseball, riding motorcycles, you name it… I’ve probably done it. I was a bit mischievous and misunderstood, one who never backed down on a fight (male or female). I got suspended more times than I was in school, and my mom was constantly attending teacher meetings. In the 9th grade, I started selling weed and realized the demand and profit was high. I quit school and became a “hustler”. I eventually enrolled into a Tech school, stepped into my girly era, and at 17 became a teen mom. Becoming a Mother at a young age changed the dynamic of my life.
