Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Smith.
Hi Megan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew always being infatuated with beauty, spending my middle school days on youtube wanting to be most extravagant cosmetologist ever. My practices started out by buying a kiss acrylic nail kit and practicing on myself as much as possible. My parents didn’t allow it but I didn’t care, I was obsessed. Makeup was next and that took my social media accounts by storm so I began doing makeup for my classmates. At first, I would do makeup for free or as little as $5 just for practice and exposure, then that became booked days for holidays, birthdays, and prom especially. But then I fell out of love for it and picked up nails again. This time I meant business and used my decent following to attract new customers. I started that in April 2019 and never looked back. Now (2002) I’m working with big names and establishing myself for a successful future.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Whew! It has not. Firstly, I don’t think people understand how expensive these products are! It’s been rough a few times. At one point I was so depressed I would cancel all my appointments because I couldn’t stand it anymore and I felt stuck. Then I got pregnant and wasn’t able to work during the last parts of my pregnancy. It was hard, but everything from my past has built me up to become a better artist and businesswoman. God has also blessed me with better hands after I took those mental breaks. Things still get to me now but I’ve learned to persevere so I can fulfill my purposes as an artist, mother, and woman.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As of right now, my style is very pink and punk. I love the glitters the rhinstones and the charms but I also love the dark, the grunge, cybergoth themes too. But I feel as though I specialize in shape and foundation most. I take lots of pride in my art and I take my time. I’m mostly known for my duck nails/flare nails. It’s an outstanding shape, my favorite in fact, and lots of people come to me and even travel hours to come get duck nails specifically by me. I LOVE IT! I’m most proud of how far I’ve come and how much better my work has gotten. It was never giving trash, but it’s gotten so much better and the subtle details of change make me most proud. I think what sets me apart from other is that I’m not participating trends. I like to be very original because how else will I stand out? Down to color schemes, embellishment placements, odd nails shapes, abstract work, textile-like art, recreating phobias on nails. I love trying new and different things and/or reinventing the past.
