Today we’d like to introduce you to My’Reek Sheriff.
Hi My’Reek, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started singing at the age of four years old my mother recognized that I had something different and that I was extremely talented for my age. Growing up, music was always a part of my life. Everyone in my family could sing, and I grew up singing in church and leading worship at a very young age. I started being classically vocally trained by an opera singer and had performance media training at Momma Jan studios and went to a performing arts high school, new Manchester high school.
I became interested in performing and singing and went on to audition for Showtime at the Apollo and won three times at age 15, went on to audition for America’s got talent American Idol X factor The Voice and the four. I received so many No’s I eventually gave up. However, I found a place that felt like home in that was creating and singing music about God. I became a worship leader and a content creator on Instagram. I will turn my aspirations and dreams into a successful empire that is founded on keeping god 1st.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Becoming the singer-songwriter and local content creator that I am today was not by any means easy. There were endless amounts of blood, sweat, tears, hard work and grind that came along with being skillful at my craft. Firstly from age 11 to 19, I was put in classical vocal training and was trained by an opera singer named Michelle. Learning the classical vocal style was very difficult for me because I had to use my voice in a completely different way than I had been used to. Not only was molding and shaping my voice in a completely different way difficult but learning music theory & learning how to sight-sing and sight-read music was hard.
All in the midst of traveling, auditioning for American music TV shows, casting calls, and endless auditions, I wrapped myself in my work and couldn’t separate work life from my personal goals and aspirations. Which, at the time as a teenager, caused me to go into a deep depression. I felt as if I was nothing more than the work that I did. Trying to appease to the entertainment industry isn’t easy, especially as a spirit-led Christian. Many times my faith was compromised, and I had gotten to the point where I no longer wanted to chase fame but wanted to chase God. With Yahweh, the struggles I had faced of being molested, raped, hurt, ostracized at a young age by family, bullied and pushed into the limelight just a little all while Trying to find my career, self-worth & stamp on the world all Became easier to work through as I put my trust and heart into Gods hands.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, as of right now, I am a cover artist. And my work consists of singing, vocal arranging and recording. So to specify, I am technically an entertainment media creative director I specialize in vocal arranging, singing, writing, videography, and so much more. I’m technically a one-man show and will one day have my own production company. I am most known for my voice. And as the 15-year-old kid that won showtime at the Apollo. With that being said I am not the best singer; however, I know what God has given me.
I would say I am most proud of the person I’ve become in the process of pressure. In the entertainment industry but also as a believer of Christ, pressure either makes you or breaks you. And to be completely honest, being able to believe in me and to bet on me and to rely on God has been the one thing that has made me proud. What sets me apart from others is my relentless work ethic. I am willing to do whatever it takes to become the successful Man of God that I know I am to be. I don’t believe in No when someone doesn’t let me have a seat at the table. I build my own And surround myself with beautifully talented overlooked people. And I also truly believe what sets me apart is that I have the universal talent to reach more than one demographic. And usually, especially as a black creative, it’s easy to get sucked into the umbrella of just being “Urban.” But being a black male creative that can do pop, r&b, rock, Contemporary Christian music, and create from scratch and professionally record from an iPhone 11 is all that you need to know that makes me separate from most. Even it fails, I continue to remember I can do all things through Christ & push through to get results.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters is that the work that I am doing pleases God and it matters because he is the one that saved me at my lowest. Being connected to something much bigger than yourself helps you navigate through life so much more easier. It may be cool to be known as a creative but am I sacrificing my gift for the Almighty, am I reaching the poor, giving back to my community, am I saving souls every time I open my mouth can you feel the presence of God through my voice? That’s what matters.
