Today we’d like to introduce you to Nanaekow Stiles.
Hi Nanaekow, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started BOYATPLAY in March 2020 with the intention of creating a hub where all my ideas can be in one place. Ideas for clothing, artwork and short films were big contenders when first starting.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never smooth. Whether it’s my own personal insecurities or financial struggles, there’s always something. How I have combatted those struggles was just recognizing no one is going to make the art for me, no is going to create the content I want to make but me. I decided I might as well just keep going and figure out alternative routes to get to my destination. If I have to come up with the money to reach my goal, I’ll figure it out. If I can’t think of ideas to make art with I have to find out what’s inspiring me currently. There’s always a way to figure it out.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I basically draw, paint, and sell clothes. Each season I have a central theme and all my artwork centers around that theme. I would say I’m most proud of my involvement with my first art show this summer. I was among some incredible artists and they made me feel welcome. I couldn’t believe I got that opportunity.
I don’t know what sets me apart from others. I think I just put a lot of effort in my work. Not the art in particular but my brand overall. I have very specific ideas and I execute them as perfectly as I can.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Honestly my friends and family. They were big supporters when I first started and still are. They gave me ideas of what I could try. They remind me of what the masses like and how I can integrate that into my work.
