Today we’d like to introduce you to Nashayla Gibbs.
Hi Nashayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started off doing makeup at 14. I literally was up day & night watching youtube tutorials when I wasn’t at school. I learned by watching people like Aaliyah J, she was one of my favorites. I watched & applied myself by taking clients & arching/ filling in their brows at the beginning of my journey. As the years followed, I did makeup for weddings, homecoming, prom, etc. and became a known makeup artist in Albany, Ga. I moved back to Atlanta at 17 to graduate high school and this is when I started to do hair as well. I always did my own hair & made my own wigs so people started asking me, “Who did your hair?” and of course I said I did. This was when I posted a flyer saying I was making $50 units & installing them for free! That was the beginning of me becoming the makeup & hairstylist I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, it took a lot to get where I am & I’m not near done! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed the process because it made me appreciate my business 100x more. Particularly because I started off my career young and it’s always been self-funded. When I made my profits, I put it back into my business by buying the products I needed. I’m big on quality so none of my cosmetic or hair products are cheap that I have to stock up on & that’s to ensure all off my clients are satisfied. With everything, there are struggles & when Covid 19 hit, that was the main one. A lot of major events I had booked got canceled abruptly. I was living in Atlanta working at Cut Creators and I had to relocate to my hometown Albany, Ga where my family is. Being there gave me the opportunity to build my clientele with hair since I was mainly known for doing makeup. I had to put my Atlanta business on hold, I only traveled there on the weekends but my clients were very understanding considering the circumstances.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Makeup Artist & Hairstylist based in Atlanta, GA. I specialize in making custom units, teaching lace & makeup classes, lace installs, & makeup for all occasions. I’m known for my natural glams & natural lace installs. I’m most proud of my growth & how every install or makeup look consistently looks great every time. What sets me apart from others is literally me being me. I take my time with each install, I talk to my clients to see what products work best for them in particular. Every client’s experience is customized just for them for the time that they’re being serviced by me.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see my business in the future evolving with time as time evolves as well. I’m in tune with the trends that come & go with hair & makeup and I try the ones I think are cute. In the future, I plan on being more savvy with the TikTok trend since that’s really what’s hot right now. It’s the biggest platform out, leading over Youtube and that’s where I learned most of the skills I have today. I eventually would love to have my own suite or salon & be able to travel doing hair & makeup in & out of the United States. I plan to keep up with whatever is going on in the beauty industry & try new things!
