Rising Stars: Meet Nekabari Yobo aka DJ Yobz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nekabari Yobo aka DJ Yobz.

Hi Nekabari, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began throwing parties in college, the University of West Georgia, which were always talk of the campus. Being the person that always had the AUX cord, I knew what my peers wanted to hear to keep the fun going & all my friends insisted I start a DJ career. Back then, I only used my phone. I didn’t actually get my 1st board until June 2019, which made it official. Practicing in my apartment consistently for 2 months, helped me build my skills & transitions when playing music. From there, I got my 1st real gig Dj’ing for a friend’s birthday party. Word of mouth got around that I was a real DJ & all my college friends started booking me for personal events, pop-up shops, networking events, etc… Not too long after that, I started getting notice from Atlanta promoters over clubs/lounges. I then began playing at several clubs, lounges, bars around Metro Atlanta then two years later I managed to secure a full time position with Fin & Feathers. I’m still fairly new in the industry, so building my networking circle & marketing myself got me pretty far ahead of most. Now, I mainly play at F&F, Odyssey Lounge, private events and other open opportunities around the city when needed.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it was not smooth, I’ve played in a lot of “hole-in-the-wall” venues during my journey, places I don’t think other DJs would go. Also, Covid 19 happened & it seemed like all events would’ve been cut short. Thankfully, living in Atlanta, we never really closed. So I continued to work wherever I could to build my name & experience. Other than the temporary inconsistency, ups & downs of reality and politics of the nightlife, it really took a lot of hustle & networking to get where I am today. It was all worth it in the end.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Atlanta Dj, DJ Yobz & I am Nigerian-American. This sets me apart from a huge list of DJs in Atlanta because (1) I really am born & raised in Atlanta. I have a Nigerian family as well which gave me a better insight on Afrobeats music. Along with that, I began adding Reggae, Dancehall & all other types of International music to my playlist. I also grew up around a lot of older people, which gave me an “old head” ear for music. I pretty much listen to everything. Adele is my favorite artist, so that should tell you a lot. Therefore, I am able to play in several different crowds & adjust to my environment. Ratchet Atlanta mixed with International & Old school hip-hop/R&B, you get a good party.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite memory from my childhood would be spending time with all my cousins on the weekends. My family is pretty big, so every weekend all my cousins would come to my house & we would have an amazing time. From going on trips to Six Flags or out of town to skate/movie nights, I enjoyed being around all of my family at once.
