Today we’d like to introduce you to OBN Jay.
Hi OBN, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My upbringing was rough. I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in a single-parent home. My family was street-oriented, and most times, they stayed really close in the neighborhood, some families stayed on the same street, and some stayed one street over. In 2018, I decided to take my craft serious and started going to different studios in Baton Rouge, LA. I remember getting a job doing flooring work just to shoot videos and get studio time. My first 4 videos, I shot them all in the same outfit all in one day because I was so passionate. I was still in high school. During this time, I can remember I started getting traction around graduation time. By the time November came in 2018 I was signing to Columbia Records.
I began doing a lot media press and big moves. Ever since that moment, I have been doing really well. I went on a run with Columbia from 2018-2020.
The next situation I committed to was Empire distribution. I did a lot of work there and released features with Money Man, King Von, and also Jackboy.
In 2023, I signed a partnership with MNRK MUSIC GROUP. We are getting ready to release singles with Dej Loaf and Hunxho. My album will be coming in July!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were some struggles coming up when it came down to support in my own city. Sometimes, it be harder to get support in your hometown until they see you doing big things around the world.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most known for my Louisiana cadence and swag in my music. I love to go to the studio and make music with producers on the spot. I’m also into the fashion world. I love to do photoshoots and brand deals as well. I would say I’m most proud of the success of my music and wide range of audience that I’ve built from ground up. What sets me apart from others is that even if I have a big team or deal or not, I’m still apart of the main topic, I’m still apart of the culture. When they mention music & Louisiana, they going to mention me. I think that’s what I’m most proud of.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a kid who liked sports but couldn’t always play because it was expensive sometimes for my mama to cover the cost. I was a kid who used to just do stuff in the neighborhood, walking around or riding bikes with my cousin in the hood. I was always quiet and still believe to be the same way.
