Rising Stars: Meet Octavius Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavius Miller.

Hi Octavius, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
So I’m from a small town in the middle of nowhere. Shoutout to GRIFFIN, GA! My childhood was extremely modest and meager. I’ve been in the church my ENTIRE life and I literally mean my ENTIRE life. Unfortunately, I saw and experienced some things early on in life that no child should be subjected to. There were two things that kept me sane during that time: 1) my love for God and 2) my love for MUSIC. I joined the Sunshine Band (children’s choir) at the age of two, cultivating my love for gospel music and was later introduced to musical theatre/choral music by my kindergarten music teacher, Ms. Josie. Over the years, I spent my time balanced between my musical efforts and my secular occupation in homeland security and legislative political advocacy. A few years ago, God granted me the open door to walk away from my secular obligations and pursue my music and clothing aspirations full-time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to destiny is never an easy one. It is always filled with detours, distractions, and moments that feel like death. Along the road to where I currently am, I have faced many battles from abuse to rejection to frustration. There have been multiple moments where I wanted to walk away but even in those moments, there was something in me that made me stay on the path.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
For the last 23 years, I have served as a worship leader. God has afforded me the opportunity to travel around this nation and minister at countless churches and conferences. I would say my specialty is teaching worshipers how to be more dependent upon Holy Spirit and singing what they hear and see, even when it goes against the normative way of doing things. One of the greatest things I have achieved is being able to work with worship teams and individuals. Aside from being an artist in the musical arena, I’m also expressing my art in the clothing arena as well. I am the owner of two clothing brands, one specializing in unisex faith-based apparel and the other specializing in urban and church wear for big and tall men.

What makes you happy?
Right now, the thing that makes me the happiest is spending time with my five-year-old daughter Jace. She is literally God’s gift of happiness and joy to me. Outside of that, I am the most happiest when I am singing, teaching, or creating new clothing ideas.
