Rising Stars: Meet Paul Rivers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Rivers.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well as a kid I had the love for music. Every Sunday I would listen to Casey Casey Top 40 which would open my mind up to all genres. I started trying to dj when I was station in Okinawa, Japan. I would provide the music for all of my command functions. So when I return to the states I took a seven years break. So what made me get back into it was when a TV program name Master of the Mix and there was a Dj name Chris Karns who I admire on there with what he was doing. So as I watch that show I said to myself that’s what I wanted to do. From there I started buying Dj equipment along with get some dj lessons. I did some research and came across a Dj name Dj Kermit who was provide dj lessons. I sign up for about 2 to 3 months of classes where I learned the basics to mixing, songs structure, counting and other things. Which brings me today where I have been going at it for about 7 years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things didn’t go as smooth as I thought it was mean, I was thinking I was all that until you get around other DJs and you are nowhere on their level. Watching and seeing the things that they was doing told me I need to getting my stuff together If I was going to do this for real. So I would just practice mixing all kinds of music until I felt like I was ready to take on a paying gig. So I start marketing myself as a Dj it took about 3 months before I got my first gig. So as I was preparing for my 1 gig I soon learned when I got to the gig it wasn’t nothing like I thought it would be, meaning I was nervous as hell. It seemed like nothing was going as I planned it. I finally pulled myself together and was able to pull the event off without anyone noticing my inexperience. As for the struggle you learn ready quick that you must stay on top of your music and organize.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My name is Paul Rivers and I go by the name of Dj P Rock. As for the types of services I provide I Dj weddings, Birthday parties, Clubs, Tailgate and Reunion along with my dj service I added photobooths and uplighting as well. I call myself The Hardest Hustling Dj in the City because I have said to myself someone may be a little better than me but they will not out Hustle me so I stay on the grind. I’m most proud of all the compliments I have received from my peers and clients and that’s because of my work ethic I try to take it to the max every chance I get just because I want to see if I’m as good as I think I am so I look for a challenge in everything I do. What set me apart from others is I believe in myself 1000 percent. Mean I invest in me I have about 7 different Dj Booths because I didn’t want to show up to an event looking like the normal Dj with a table with wires showing. So I take pride in my presentation when someone hires me for their event.

What matters most to you?
The feedback I get from clients. Because I’m always looking to be better the next time I’m hired.
