Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Hogan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2014, I was considering a career shift from the social services industry to entrepreneurship. Having already earned a Master’s in Social Work from Fordham University (’00) and a Master’s in Public Administration from American Public University (’14), I wasn’t motivated to pursue another degree. While contemplating my options, I purchased a car from out of state. The car loan closing took place in my home, where a traveling notary arrived with all the documents to finalize the loan.
I had never heard of a traveling notary before, so I asked him to explain how he got into the profession. Not only did he answer my questions, but he also shared where and how I could market similar services to the public. I applied all his advise and suggestions.
Before long, my phone began to ring with calls from individuals and title insurance companies seeking my notary signing services. The more calls I received, the more business I accepted. By late 2015, a national title company had become one of my clients. They were sending me a significant amount of business, and because they were so satisfied with my work, they approached me about collaborating on their expansion project. They asked if I would consider starting a signing service to work with them directly.
I said yes. In February 2016, I officially launched **Signing Services of America, LLC**.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not.
Human Resources
Hiring experienced staff is and remains very challenging. Over the 9 years I’ve learned how to effectively interview, hire, train and evaluate in house staff.
Accounting – I had to learn our accounting system, technology and various financial documents. Once done I’ve hired our accountant.
Sales and Marketing – While I was very fortunate to start a business with a major client sending us 4-5 figure monthly business. I still had to learn who was my avatar client, how to approach them for business and over the years marketing has become more complex, thus our strategies have evolved.
Policies and Procedures- COVID was a disrupter- We have to shift from working in offie to working remotely. We were unprepared for this, however all staff dug in and worked with me to get everyone set up to work remotely , while orders were still scheduled. Many companies closed their door, yet SSA not only kept theirs open, but soared as a result.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a PADI certified Master Scuba Diver and underwater photographer. I’ve dove and filmed a variety of different sea animals, in South America, Central America, North America and Asia. I also volunteer to speak to children about diving, and underwater photography during career day at various schools in the metro-Atlanta region.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up in Hempstead, NY, during the 60″s. My friends and I would all be playing some type of street game. kickball, football, basketball or riding our bikes around the block and swimming in my built in pool or our neighbors pool. It was simple, safe and fun time times for all that lived in my block.
