Today we’d like to introduce you to Pink The Wordsmith-Stage Name Murphy M..
Pink the Wordsmith, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story starts in 2022 when I made the decision to attend Oglethorpe University as a Communication Studies Major. That fall is where I met Jaidyn Carter (dj glassheart) in Intro to Digital Photography. From there we built a bond based off mutual respect and the love of art. We weren’t close at first kept in contact. I helped him with some of his short films, that was really it. Fast forward to October 2024 is when he started to upload beats on Instagram. From there some time went by he was still at it and one day the sounds hit me differently. I always been a writer and poet, but that was the moment I decided to create. Just about every single day we working on ideas. Then it hit that we had something which birthed Rookies Renaissance that November. Since then we have been “making the magic happen”. What started as a duo has become a collective and without ViVa there is no Pink the Wordsmith.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The 1Path is as smooth as you make it honestly. For me the challenge was how could I create something timeless? How could I blend my academic pursuits, my poetry, my spirituality, my essence into one body? I still don’t have all the answers, but I know I am on track.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a multi-hyphenate artist. I’m a griot, journalist, poet, producer, photographer, and model among other things. I specialize in acts of faith through creation. I am most proud of my ability to transform my ideas and beliefs into tangible assets. What sets me apart is my individuality and authenticity. My why also sets me apart. I remember being in my Media, Culture, and Society class we were having a discussion about how culture influences society. Being in the digital era it made me reflect on the type of content that is being pushed these days or how despite there being lots of good product it isn’t as memorable or won’t stick as long as those came before us. I wanted to be the change I wanted to see.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is liberation the ability to exist within my blackness without a single constraint. Remembrance matters to me, not in the sense of fame or accolades because I see those as byproducts of pursuing passion, but to know that I have left my mark on those around by me to have an impact that surpasses me when it is all said and done.
